Stony Brook, Albany, UMBC Win on Day 1 of #AESB Championship
VESTAL, N.Y. – Stony Brook, Albany and UMBC all posted wins on the first day of the 2016 America East Softball Championship Wednesday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The fourth-seeded Seawolves beat fifth-seeded UMBC, 3-1, in the first game of the day while third-seeded Albany beat sixth-seeded Hartford, 7-1, in the second game. The Retrievers bounced back for a 4-0 win over the Hawks in the final game of the day, the first elimination contest of the championship.
Stony Brook will face top-seeded Binghamton in the first game Thursday at 11 a.m. while Albany will play second-seeded Maine at 1:30 p.m. UMBC will play the lowest seeded team among the losers of the early games at 4 p.m.

#4 Stony Brook 3, #5 UMBC 1
Patty Borges had two hits and drove in two of Stony Brook’s three runs and Jane Sallen held fifth-seeded UMBC to just one run in a complete-game effort to lead the fourth-seeded Seawolves to a 3-1 win in the opener of the 2016 America East Championship Wednesday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
UMBC got the scoring started in the top of the first as Morgan Peyou singled with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on Carly Lesko’s base hit. The All-Rookie choice scored a sacrifice fly by Tori Alexander.
Stony Brook (26-22-2) evened the score 1-1 in its half of the second. Chelsea Evans led off with a bloop single to right, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Lexi Shue and moved up on Melissa Phelan’s fly out to right. Borges drove her in with another bloop hit to right.
The Seawolves went up 2-1 in the fourth. Chelsea Evans singled to right and got to third on a two-base error by UMBC right fielder Kelly Lane. Evans came home on Phelan’s squeeze bunt.
UMBC threatened in its half of the sixth as Peyou tripled to left to lead off the frame, but Stony Brook hurler Jane Sallen got out of the jam retiring the next three hitters.
SBU added an insurance run in the six on Borges second RBI single of the day in the sixth and Sallen set UMBC down in order in the seventh to closer it out. The senior southpaw, a first-team All-Conference selection scattered just four hits and walked no one to earn her 16th win of the season.
#3 Albany 7, #6 Hartford 1
Third-seeded Albany pounded out 12 hits and Devin Durando stymied sixth-seeded Hartford in a complete-game effort as the Great Danes beat the Hawks, 7-1, in the second game of the 2016 America East Softball Championship Wednesday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Albany jumped out to a 3-0 lead out of the gate, plating three in the first. The first three Great Danes all had hits as Mackenzie Bump and Kelly Costello singled and Maggie Cocks’ run-scoring double plated Bump. Liz Snow delivered a sacrifice fly to bring Costello home and advance Cocks to third. She scored on Donna Conrad’s single up the middle.
Both teams threatened in their half of the third. Hartford put two runners on in the third inning via walk but could not score. The Great Danes loaded the bases but Hawks’ catcher Sawyer Fried threw behind Donna Conrad to pick her off second base and end the threat.
Conrad made up for the mistake in the fifth, delivering an RBI single to give Albany a 4-0 lead. The Great Danes could have had more but Cleary lined into a highlight reel unassisted double play turned by Hartford third baseman Danielle DeMarco.
Hartford got its lone run in the sixth. America East All-Rookie choice Kylie Dazalla earned a one-out walked and DeMarco drove her in with a two-out double to left center, the Hawks ‘first hit of the game.
Albany added three more in the sixth to cushion its lead. After senior Lindsey Haskell led off the inning with a single up the middle, freshman Sarah Petzold singled to left and Bump knocked home pinch runner Kayla Bailey. Costello’s groundout scored Petzold, and Cocks’ drove in Costello with her second double of the day.
Donna Conrad went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Great Danes. Durando allowed just the one run on three hits and fanned five.
#5 UMBC 4, # 6 Hartford 0
Kim Puccio fired one-hit complete-game shutout and Bridget O’Malley went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs to lead fifth-seeded UMBC to a 4-0 win over sixth-seeded Hartford in the first elimination game of the 2016 America East Softball Championship Wednesday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Both Puccio and Hartford hurler Bianca Ross held the opposing lineup scoreless through three innings.
UMBC broke the scoreless tie in its half of the fourth. With one out and a runner on first, Jordan Spanga singled. She moved up on a fielder’s choice and came around to score on O’Malley’s RBI double.
Carly Lesko added to the Retrievers’ lead in the fifth, blasting a solo home run to right center, her 11th of the year.
The Retrievers plated a pair of unearned runs in the sixth to pad their lead. O’Malley delivered a sacrifice fly and Tori Alexander had an RBI single to make it 4-0 after six.
Puccio retired the side in the seventh, finishing off her one-hitter during. She walked just one and fanned three.
