For the first time since 2001, the America East Women’s Soccer Championship game will be a rematch as No. 1 seed Albany and No. 2 seed Hartford advanced to the title game with semifinal wins on Sunday afternoon.
The 2016 championship game will be played on Sunday, November 6 at 6 PM and will feature No. 1 Albany hosting No. 2 Hartford. The game will be streamed live for free on AmericaEast.TV.
A goal in the 74th minute of play by Skylar Vitiello proved to be the difference for Hartford as the second-seeded Hawks beat No. 6 Vermont, 1-0. Hartford advanced to its third-straight title game and 13th in program history. The Hawks, who are now 12-2-1 all-time in semifinal matches, are looking for their first title since 2006.
Kiana Rugar’s goal in the 34th minute of action was the only scoring the Great Danes needed, as the top-seed hung on for a thrilling, 1-0, victory over New Hampshire. The Wildcats had a corner kick in the closing seconds but Kendra Prince’s header crossed the goal line after time expired, giving Albany the victory. Freshman Chloe Borasky made six stops to record the shutout. The Great Danes will look to become the first repeat champions since Boston U. won five titles from 2007-2011.
