Albany, Hartford Advance in Winner's Bracket of #AESB Championship

VESTAL, N.Y. – Two walk offs and a one run win highlighted Day 1 of the 2017 America East Softball Championship as Albany, Hartford and Stony Brook all posted victories Wednesday at the Bearcats Softball Complex.

The fourth-seeded Great Danes walked off with a 5-4 win in 10 innings against fifth-seeded UMBC in the first game of the day while sixth-seeded Hartford held off a seventh-inning rally from third-seeded Stony Brook and upset the Seawolves, 2-1, in the second game. Stony Brook bounced back for a 3-0 walk off win over the Retrievers in the final game of the day, the first elimination contest of the championship.

Shaye Swiatek delivered a two-out, run scoring double in the bottom of the 10th to break a 4-4 tie and send Albany onto the winner's bracket. Kelly Barkevich had tied the game with a pinch hit home run in the seventh after UMBC took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth. Kelly Spear had three hits to lead the Great Danes, while second-team All-Conference choice Carly Lesko had two hits, including a two-run homer in the first, to lead UMBC.

After scoring single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, Hartford held off a rally attempt from Stony Brook to post its first championship win since 2007. With two outs, two on and one run in, Isabella Gerone induced a flyout to center field as the Hawks snapped their 26-game losing skid. Bianca Ross had three hits, including a solo shot in the seventh inning. Gerone didn't allow an earned run in a complete game effort to pick up her first win of the year.

Irena Rivera belted a two-out, three-run walk off home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh as Stony Brook avoided elimination with a win over UMBC. Melissa Rahrich, a first-team All-America East pitcher, fired a complete-game shutout and worked out of trouble, stranding six Retrievers, while striking out four.

Albany will face top-seeded Binghamton in the first game Thursday at 11 a.m. while Hartford will play second-seeded Maine at 1:30 p.m. Stony Brook will play the lowest seeded team among the losers of the early games at 4 p.m.
