Albany, Maine Advance to Winner's Bracket Final of #AESB Championship
VESTAL, N.Y. – Albany and Maine posted wins on day two of the 2017 America East Championship Thursday at the Bearcats Softball Complex to advance to the tournament's winner's bracket final. Stony Brook was also victorious, avoiding elimination.
Fourth-seeded Albany plated runs in the top of the seventh and eighth innings to post a come from behind 4-3 extra inning win over top seeded Binghamton while second-seeded Maine scored seven times in the fourth and fifth frames to beat sixth-seeded Hartford, 9-1. Third-seeded Stony Brook rode a three-run home run from Taylor Pechin en route to a 7-3 victory over Hartford to stay alive in the tournament.
America East Player of the Year Liz Snow tied the game at three by crushing a 2-2 changeup over the center field fence in the top of the seventh and Sarah Petzold led off the eighth with a double and scored what would be the winning run as Albany advanced to Friday's winner's bracket final. Celeste Verdolivo got out of a jam in bottom of the frame after the first two Bearcats got on. Albany's Donna Conrad and Binghamton's Sara Herskowitz and Kate Richard hit solo homers in the game. Verdolivo went the distance for Albany, allowing just three runs over eight innings to earn the win.
Reigning league champion Maine scored four times in the fourth and three more times in the fifth to advance on to the winner's bracket final for the second-straight year. Meg Royle ended the game with a three-run bases clearing triple in the fifth. She also had a two-run double and drove in five. The Black Bears' Erin Bogdanovich and Molly Flowers combined to allow just one run on one hit over five innings.
Taylor Pechin's third inning three-run homer proved to be the difference as Stony Brook avoided elimination with a win over Hartford. Pechin's homer was her first as a collegian. Jourdin Hering had three hits and scored a pair of runs for the Seawolves. Elizabeth Newkirk plated all three of Hartford's runs.
