What They're Doing

The University of Albany and their partnering school, Hackett Middle School, are working to kick off their mentoring program where the student-athletes will visit a couple Mondays every month during the afternoon program.  They will continue to participate in the “Teen Nights” that Hackett hosts throughout the year which were a huge success for both the student-athletes and scholars building relationships.  Other events that will take place throughout the year are visits to Albany’s campus and the first “Take a Student-Athlete to School” Day.

Binghamton University and West Middle School are in the process of matching the mentors with their mentees.  They are working on planning their kick-off event and activities at Binghamton and West Middle.

Boston University and Jackson Mann are having their kick-off event at BU on Thursday, October 19th.  Jackson Mann scholars will spend two hours on campus as they take part in many activities including, BU Experience video, presentation and Q&A session with School of Management professor, walking tour of campus, and lunch.  Mentors and mentees will meet once a month throughout the school year visiting each other’s campuses; activities include the community service event with City Roots, scavenger hunt at Jackson Mann, presentations by BU faculty, and college planning.

Returning mentors have begun their weekly visits to University of Hartford Magnet School where they meet with their mentee for 30 minutes.  New mentors will be meeting their mentees soon; there are over a hundred student-athletes in the program.  Hartford and the Magnet School are finalizing activities to do during the half days that happen throughout the year.  Likely activities include: student-athletes providing anti bullying presentations for the scholars, college panels, leadership activities, and food drives.

University of Maine and Dr. Lewis S. Libby School are pairing their mentors and mentees with weekly visits to Dr. Lewis S. Libby.  Maine is looking to add another school to the partnership to accommodate student athlete’s schedules and when they are available to visit.  Scholars will visit Maine’s campus multiple times throughout the year where they have the opportunity to see a college campus, observe/participate in a class, attend a sporting event, learn about the college process, and play games.

UMBC student-athletes will visit Arbutus Middle School once a week to attend a class and work with students to discuss future goals and map, organize clinic/skills sessions, and teamwork games.  Events that take place throughout the school year include attending Midday Madness at UMBC.  Arbutus Alums will also be invited to share their college path with current Arbutus scholars, campus tour, attend sporting event, Arbutus College Planning unit, and Fall Food Drives.  Student-athletes and scholars will also plan events to support a Catonsville high school student battling brain cancer.

University of New Hampshire and New Market Junior High School have already kicked off their weekly mentoring meetings at New Market.  The partnership is working to finalize plans for events throughout the year.  Likely activities will include a college panel for scholars, food drive for the community, and campus visits to UNH.

Looking to add a satellite partner school.

The University of Vermont and their partnering school, Integrated Arts Academy, have their first event on Sunday, October 21st.   Scholars will visit UVM’s campus to participate in an activity with student-athletes, lunch in the dining hall, and then attend the women’s soccer game vs. Binghamton University.  Integrated Arts Academy will welcome UVM student-athletes later that week for their kick-off pizza party on Thursday, October 25th.  UVM is looking to add another school to accommodate the additional student athletes that have signed up to mentor.
