About CFES
College For Every Student (www.collegefes.org) is a
non-profit organization that has created college-access partnerships with more
than 500 schools across the country serving more than 100,000 students. CFES
partners K-12 schools with colleges to implement three primary core practices:
Pathways to College-- college visits, and partnerships with colleges and
college students; Peer Mentoring-mentee/mentor relationships; and Leadership
Through Service-leadership development workshops and community service. For

About the Partnership
The unique
America East/CFES partnership launched in the fall of 2010 where
Collegiate student-athletes serve as mentors for CFES scholars at
partnership schools. The college-student activities include tutoring
sessions, joint community service projects and campus tours that often
involve watching a collegiate athletic event.

What They're Doing
|

|
The University of Albany and their partnering school,
Hackett Middle School, are working to kick off their mentoring program where
the student-athletes will visit a couple Mondays every month during the
afternoon program. They will continue to
participate in the “Teen Nights” that Hackett hosts throughout the year which
were a huge success for both the student-athletes and scholars building
relationships. Other events that will
take place throughout the year are visits to Albany’s campus and the first
“Take a Student-Athlete to School” Day.

Binghamton
University and West Middle School are in the process of matching the mentors
with their mentees. They are working on
planning their kick-off event and activities at Binghamton and West Middle.

|
Boston
University and Jackson Mann are having their kick-off event at BU on Thursday,
October 19th. Jackson Mann
scholars will spend two hours on campus as they take part in many activities
including, BU Experience video, presentation and Q&A session with School of
Management professor, walking tour of campus, and lunch. Mentors and mentees will meet once a month
throughout the school year visiting each other’s campuses; activities include
the community service event with City Roots, scavenger hunt at Jackson Mann,
presentations by BU faculty, and college planning.

Returning
mentors have begun their weekly visits to University of Hartford Magnet School
where they meet with their mentee for 30 minutes. New mentors will be meeting their mentees
soon; there are over a hundred student-athletes in the program. Hartford and the Magnet School are finalizing
activities to do during the half days that happen throughout the year. Likely activities include: student-athletes
providing anti bullying presentations for the scholars, college panels,
leadership activities, and food drives.

University
of Maine and Dr. Lewis S. Libby School are pairing their mentors and mentees
with weekly visits to Dr. Lewis S. Libby.
Maine is looking to add another school to the partnership to accommodate
student athlete’s schedules and when they are available to visit. Scholars will visit Maine’s campus multiple
times throughout the year where they have the opportunity to see a college
campus, observe/participate in a class, attend a sporting event, learn about
the college process, and play games.

UMBC
student-athletes will visit Arbutus Middle School once a week to attend a class
and work with students to discuss future goals and map, organize clinic/skills
sessions, and teamwork games. Events
that take place throughout the school year include attending Midday Madness at UMBC.
Arbutus Alums will also be invited to
share their college path with current Arbutus scholars, campus tour, attend
sporting event, Arbutus College Planning unit, and Fall Food Drives. Student-athletes and scholars will also plan
events to support a Catonsville high school student battling brain cancer.

University
of New Hampshire and New Market Junior High School have already kicked off
their weekly mentoring meetings at New Market.
The partnership is working to finalize plans for events throughout the
year. Likely activities will include a
college panel for scholars, food drive for the community, and campus visits to
UNH.

Looking to add a satellite partner school.
|
|
|
The
University of Vermont and their partnering school, Integrated Arts Academy,
have their first event on Sunday, October 21st. Scholars will visit UVM’s campus to
participate in an activity with student-athletes, lunch in the dining hall, and
then attend the women’s soccer game vs. Binghamton University. Integrated Arts Academy will welcome UVM
student-athletes later that week for their kick-off pizza party on Thursday,
October 25th. UVM is looking
to add another school to accommodate the additional student athletes that have
signed up to mentor.
