CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With the first weekend of America East women’s basketball in the books, the season’s first weekly awards were announced by the conference office on Monday. Boston University senior Chantell Alford was named Player of the Week, while Binghamton’s Morgan Murphy earned Rookie of the Week accolades. Alford (West Haven, Conn.) led the Terriers to a 52-46 win over the ACC’s Boston College with 17 points and seven rebounds. The two-time America East Player of the Year tied for the league-lead in scoring average and ranked fifth in rebounding for the weekend. Alford hit on three 3-pointers, scoring five of the Terriers’ final 10 points. She hit a pair of clutch free-throws with less than a minute to go to help ice the game and give Boston U back-to-back wins over the Eagles for the first time since 1984. Murphy (Wethersfield, Conn.) scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds in her collegiate debut at St. Bonaventure. She led all freshmen in scoring average and rebounding for the weekend. Murphy went 4-of-5 from the field and shot .800 from the free throw line. She is the first Bearcat rookie to reach double figures in her first career game since current junior guard Jasbriell Swain had 18 points in the 2010 season opener.
