Boston U., Hartford Notch Wins Friday Night; Four Games Saturday Afternoon

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Hartford remained unbeaten on the young season and Boston University finished a three-game homestand with a 2-1 record, as the Hawks and Terriers each grabbed wins on Friday night in America East women's basketball action.

The Terriers topped Richmond, 70-61, with four players scoring in double figures. Chantell Alford led Boston U. for the third-straight game, scoring a team-high 18 points, while Rashidat Agboola had 12 points and 14 rebounds for her ninth career double-double.

After an even first half, the Terriers built double-digit leads twice over the Spiders in the second half, the latest coming at 67-56 with 1:20 remaining after back-to-back layups from Alford. A 3-pointer cut the deficit to eight, but the Terriers hit 3-of-4 from the free throw line to close out the win.

Hartford also had four players in double figures, with Nikkia Smith and Amber Bepko leading the way with 17 points each to help the Hawks to a 76-62 win over Central Connecticut St. Ruthanne Doherty (13) and Daphe Elliott (11) also were in double figures.

The Blue Devils made a run scoring eight-straight to pull within four with 3:43 remaining in the game. The Hawks defense stepped up and held the Blue Devils to just two more baskets, while offensively Hartford hit 9-of-10 at the line in the final 1:22 to secure the victory to remain unbeaten in 2012-13.

Four teams take the floor today, all for early afternoon contests. Vermont hosts Brown at 1 p.m. and UMBC takes on local rival Loyola at 2 p.m. New Hampshire and Maine are both on the road, with the Wildcats visiting Holy Cross at 1 p.m. and the Black Bears taking on UNLV in Minnesota at 2 p.m.
