CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In the first meet of the New Year, four UMBC track and field athletes have earned Performer of the Week honors. For the men, Trae Proctor and Shioma Obemeata have earned Track Performer of the Week and Field Performer of the Week honors, respectively. Meanwhile, Mercedes Jackson earned her second Track Performer of the Week honor while teammate Amanda Deller gets the nod as Field Performer of the Week.

Competing at the Penn State Relays, Proctor (Brandywine, Md.) had a record-setting day. The senior matched his personal-record of 8.02 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles in the preliminary round and advanced to the finals. There, Proctor raced past the field with a time of 8.00 seconds which was not only a new personal-record, but it broke a school-record that was set in 2000 as well. Proctor’s time in the 60 meter hurdles is the best in the conference this year and tied for ninth-best in the country.

Obemeata (New Rochelle, N.Y.) set the current America East standard in the triple jump with a jump of 47’7” (14.5 meters). That distance also currently stands 25th in the nation and it qualified Obemeata for the IC4A Championships. The senior also competed in the high jump, clearing a height of 5’10.75” (1.8 meters).

Jackson (Huntingtown, Md.) had a record-setting day of her own at the Penn State Relays. The sophomore broke the school-record for the second time this season in the 60 meter dash and also came away victorious in the 200 meter dash. After qualifying for the finals with a time of 7.48 in the 60, Jackson cruised to a victory in 7.42 seconds to break a record she had set previously. She followed that up with a time of 24.35 seconds to win the 200 meter dash. Jackson’s 60 meter time is the best in the conference by over three-tenths of a second and is tied for seventh-best nationally.

Last year’s Most Outstanding Field Athlete, Deller (Aberdeen, Md.) set season-bests in both throwing events over the weekend. The senior finished fifth in both the shot put (45’0.25”/13.72 meters), and the weight throw (51’4.25”/15.65 meters). Deller owns the top America East mark in the shot put and ranks third in the conference for the weight throw.

Albany was the other school in action this weekend, as it made the trip to West Point, N.Y. for the Carlton Crowell Open.  Sean Cooper (Montgomery, N.Y.) was the highlight for the men, as he won the heptathlon with 4,720 points. Additionally, Paige Vadnais (Merrick, N.Y.) turned in a second-place showing in the pentathlon.

Four schools will compete this coming weekend as the 2013 portion of the schedule continues to get underway. Albany will head to the Nittany Lion Challenge, Binghamton will make the trek to the West Point Invitational, and UMBC and Stony Brook will both take part in the Gotham Cup held in New York City.
