Nine from America East Head to Nationals

Release: 05/29/2013

EUGENE, Ore. – Nine America East student-athletes will head to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Oregon’s Heyward Field June 5-8 as the quest for a national title continues. This also marks a new high for the conference, after eight America East athletes went on to nationals three times in the past four years.

The 2013 America East men’s champion, Albany, will send two competitors to nationals in Alexander Bowen (Beacon, N.Y.) and Alfonso Scannapieco (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.). Bowen, an America East record holder in the high jump, will continue his sophomore campaign after qualifying with a height of 7’1.5” at regionals. Scannapieco cleared 17’2.75” at regionals to qualify for nationals.

Boston University will be represented at the NCAA meet by three standouts. Katie Matthews (Rocky Hill, Conn.), Rich Peters (Bristol, England) and Zachary Ray (Huntingtown, Md.) are set to compete as the Terriers send three athletes to nationals for the first time since 2011. Matthews will compete in the women’s 10,000 meters, Peters qualified for the men’s 1,500 meters and Ray will take place in the men’s 400 meter hurdles.

UMBC will be represented by multiple athletes at the national championship for the first time in school history, as Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md.) and Vincent Rentzsch (Orianenburg, Germany) both qualified after strong regional performances. Jackson will compete in the women’s 100 meter dash, an event in which she holds the America East record, while Rentzsch will continue his excellent freshman year in the men’s javelin throw.

Rounding out this impressive group will be a pair of women from Maine. Seniors Corey Conner (Townsend, Mass.) and Jesse Labreck (Oakland, Maine) will conclude their storied careers in search of a national championship next week. Conner will run in the 10,000 meters while Labreck, an automatic qualifier to the championship, will compete in the heptathlon.
