By virtue of its 3-0 victory over Stony Brook on Wednesday evening, Albany (17-9, 10-2 America East) has clinched the right to host the 2006 America East Volleyball Championship on November 18-19 and at least a share of the regular-season title.
The league title is the third-straight for the Great Danes, who were knocked off in the semifinals of last year tournament by the Seawolves. This year's semifinals will take place on Saturday, November 18 with the title match on Sunday, November 19. Match times are to be determined.
Binghamton (14-15, 8-2) has locked up the No. 2 seed in the four-team field and would share the regular-season crown if the Bearcats win their final two matches of the season. UMBC (12-14, 5-5), New Hampshire (10-15, 5-5), Stony Brook (12-16, 5-6) and Maine (6-18, 4-6) are fighting for the final two spots, Hartford (8-19, 0-11) has been eliminated from playoff contention.
The 2006 America East regular-season comes to a close this week with five league matches remaining on the schedule. Stony Brook hosts Hartford on Thursday (6 p.m.), while Maine and UMBC square off on Friday (4 p.m.). The weekend brings three key conference tilts as Binghamton is at New Hampshire on Saturday (1 p.m.) and then heads to Maine on Sunday (1 p.m.). New Hampshire also welcomes UMBC on Sunday (1 p.m.).
