Albany Captures Its First-Ever America East Baseball Championship

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- Albany won three straight, including two in dramatic fashion over top-seeded Binghamton, to capture its first-ever America East Baseball Championship on Saturday afternoon at Farmingdale State College. The Great Danes have earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will learn their opponent during the selection show live on ESPN Monday at 12:30 p.m.

In a game that will go down as one of the best pitcher’s duel in America East Championship history, starters Cory Warring (Albany) and Jeff Dennis (Binghamton) were stellar on the hill.

Neither team could get much going offensively until Albany broke the scoreless deadlock with a two-out rally in fifth. Leo Corvino drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on a single by Steve Wyland, which turned out to be the game’s only run.

Warrings, the championship’s most outstanding player, pitched six and a third shutout innings allowing just three-hits and struck out a pair. Equally impressive was the Great Dane bullpen that shutdown the Bearcats allowing just three hits in the final two and two-thirds innings.

Dennis went six complete innings allowing one run on three hits. He struck out eight batters, while Greg Lane tossed three no-hit shutout innings in relief.

Offensively, Wyland went 2-for-4 as he drove in the game’s only run for Albany, while Matt Simek went 2-for-3 for the Bearcats.
