BOSTON—UMBC’s Irfan Shamasdin (Ontario, Canada/Dunbarton) has been named the America East Men’s Tennis Performer of the Week, while Binghamton’s Zeynep Altinay (Ankara, Turkey/Ozel Abdulkadir) earns America East Women’s Tennis Performer of the Week. The accolade was announced Wednesday (April 18).

Shamasdin, UMBC’s No. 1 singles player, had a perfect week, highlighted by a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4  win over Binghamton’s Faisal Mohamed. He also combined with David Jackson to blank a Bearcat pair at No. 2 doubles as UMBC triumphed, 6-1. In addition, he won two matches (No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles) in a 5-2 win over Delaware earlier in the week. Shamasdin has a 2006-07 doubles record of 23-5 and has won 15 consecutive doubles matches this spring

Altinay, who improved her career singles record to 85-27, defeated Alice Chen 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 slot in a win over UMBC. In doubles play, she joined freshman Erica Rosenblum at the second slot to defeat Adriana Fonseca-Villarreal and Elizabeth Anderson, 8-5.
