CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --  The America East Conference office announced on Wednesday that 1,718 of its winter and spring student-athletes, over 60 percent of the athletes eligible to compete, have been named to the 2009-10 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll. Students had to earn grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher to receive this recognition. Of those student-athletes, 856 earned Commissioner’s Honor Roll status for completing the spring semester with a GPA of 3.50 or higher while competing during the winter or spring sports season.

Binghamton University had the most student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll with 272 recipients. University of New Hampshire came in second with 247 athletes recognized, followed by University of Vermont (211), University at Albany (188), Stony Brook University (181), University of Maine (175), Boston University (167), University of Hartford (150) and UMBC (149).

The Bearcats also had the most athletes listed on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll with 146 student-athletes achieving a 3.50 GPA or higher. New Hampshire and Vermont followed with 146 and 139 recipients, respectively.

Seven of America East’s nine schools had at least half of their student-athletes named to the honor roll. Vermont had the highest percentage of athletes named (70.3 percent), followed by New Hampshire (68.6), Binghamton (68.5), Stony Brook (67.5), Albany (66.1), Maine (57.9) and Boston U. (56.6).

UNH’s women’s outdoor track & field squad placed the most students-athletes on the Honor Roll with 67 achieving at least a 3.0 GPA. The Wildcats’ men’s outdoor track & field was the top men’s team, placing 37 on the honor roll.

America East is proud to have one of most comprehensive academic awards programs in the country. In addition to the honor roll, an All-Academic team comprised of student-athletes that excel both academically and athletically is chosen in each of the conference’s 20 sports by a committee consisting of faculty athletic representatives, academic advisors and sports information directors. Additionally, a scholar-athlete, someone who distinguishes himself/herself as the top student-athlete in his/her sport, is awarded. From that group, one male and one female is selected the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Finally, the America East Academic Cup, which honors the America East institution with the highest average cumulative GPA among its student-athletes. University of Vermont won its sixth straight Cup this year.
