Shonna Brown joined the America East as
Associate Commissioner for Women's Basketball/Administration in September, 2010.
She arrived in Cambridge after three years at the NCAA office.
Brown is the primary Conference contact for women's basketball operations, including regular season, postseason and at the America East Women's Basketball Championship. She oversees the direction of the Conference championship program for all 20 America East sports and serves as a liaison to the Athletics' Directors Council, the Strategic Planning Committee, the Championships and Competition Committee and the league's Senior Woman Administrator Committee.
With 14 years of experience in
intercollegiate athletics, Brown previously held the position of Assistant
Director of Championships at the NCAA. Since her hire at the national office in
2007, she worked with over 10 sports and was most recently the championship
manager for DIII Football, secondary to the DII Championships Committee and
oversaw the DII National Championships Festival.
Prior to joining the NCAA, Brown worked for
Southern Mississippi in the compliance and football operations departments.
While in graduate school, she also worked in marketing partnerships for the
Miami Dolphins and served as the coordinator of volunteers for the Volvo Ocean
Race-Round the World.
Brown went on to work for the Patriot League
and most recently the Mid-American Conference where she began as the Director
of Compliance and was quickly promoted to Assistant Commissioner of Sport Operations
and SWA. At the Mid-American Conference
Brown assisted with the internal operations of 21 conference sports, primarily
women's basketball. Brown served as the Co-Tournament
Director for the 2006 NCAA Women's Basketball Cleveland Regional and 2007 NCAA Women's
Final Four. She has worked with the
International Children's Games, U.S. Olympic Diving Trials and serves on the
planning board for the biennial Women in Intercollegiate
Athletics Leadership Symposium (WLS).
Brown also has a background in higher education. She
was an adjunct professor at Myers University for Sports Marketing &
Promotions and Introduction to Sport Management classes. Brown served on the Myers University,
McDonald School of Business Advisory Council-Sport Management and the Eastern
Michigan University, School of Health Promotion and Human Performance Advisory
Council
Brown's recognitions and organizational
membership include being named one of Northeast Ohio's Top 25 Under 35 in 2006;
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., National Association of Black Sports
Professionals (NABSP), National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic
Administrators (NACWAA), Graduate of NCAA Ethnic Minority Female Leadership
Institute and National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA),
National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) and Collegiate Event and
Facility Management Association (CEFMA).
Originally from Hattiesburg, Miss., Brown is
a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, where she earned a
Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Administration, with an emphasis in
Business Administration. She also earned her Master of Science degree in Sport
Administration from St. Thomas (Fla.) University.
