CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- America East named 10 baseball student-athletes to the 2011 All-Academic Team Tuesday morning, including the 2011 America East Player of the Year. These student-athletes, who excel both academically as well as athletically, represent the best of the America East Conference.

The All-Academic team features two first-team all-conference performers in Stony Brook sophomore William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y./Hempstead) and junior Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif./Crespi Carmelite). Carmona earned first-team All-America status earlier this month after garnering the league’s Player of the Year award, while Johnson received unanimous support as a starting pitcher on the first team.

Seven student-athletes are repeat selections to the all-academic squad, headlined by Johnson’s second straight honor and University of Hartford senior Rodger Wilmot’s (Freehold, N.J./ Freehold Township) third straight selection to the team. The other repeat choices are UMBC’s Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) and Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep), University at Albany’s Greg Lutton (New Haven, Vt./Mt. Abraham/Vermont), University of Maine’s Jonathan Balentina (Willemstad, Curacao) and University of Hartford’s Simon Kudernatsch (Prague, Czech Republic/Prague West).

Rounding out the 2011 team are Stony Brook sophomore Jasvir Rakkar (Brampton, Ontario/Bramalea Secondary School) and Binghamton sophomore Jordon Smucker (Bird-in-Hand, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite).

The All-Academic squads are a product of the June 2005 Athletics Directors meeting where faculty representatives and athletics directors from each of the conference’s nine member institutions decided to honor the league’s top student-athletes, who excel equally in the classroom as they do on the playing field.

For the third straight year, America East has chosen the All-Academic teams using CoSIDA’s Academic All-America program as a model. Student-athletes worthy of consideration are nominated by member sports information directors and voted on by a committee of SIDs, academic advisers and faculty representatives from all nine member institutions.

All-Academic squads for team sports are based on the number of athletes that participate in a contest at one time but can be more if there is a tie in voting. To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team’s games or competitions. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.
