CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The America East Conference announced its 2011-12 men’s and women’s basketball league schedules on Wednesday, a slate that will feature 144 games, including several marquis matchups.

The men’s and women’s seasons, which will consist of 72 regular-season contests each, begin on Monday, Jan. 2 with 16 of the 18 teams in action. For the seventh straight season, each team will play a 16-game, double round-robin schedule which will decide the seeding and matchups for the 2012 America East Men’s & Women’s Basketball Championship in March.

On the men’s side, highly anticipated matchups begin right away on Jan. 2 with last year’s regular-season champion Vermont visiting Stony Brook, which made its first-ever conference championship game appearance last season. The Catamounts, who will host Stony Brook on Feb. 12, will welcome reigning conference champion Boston University and its new head coach Joe Jones on Jan. 5 in a battle between the last two league champions. A rematch of last year’s America East Championship game will take place Jan. 14 in Boston with the Terriers, who return four starters from last year’s championship squad, hosting the Seawolves. The return game is Jan. 27 on Long Island.

On the women’s side, last year’s regular-season champion UMBC, which returns seven players from last year’s team, hosts 2011 league champion Hartford on Jan. 16. The two teams will meet again in Hartford on Feb. 19. The first of two scheduled rematches of last year’s America East Championship game between the Hawks and Boston University will be Jan. 22 in Boston. The two teams will wrap up the regular season Feb. 25 at Hartford. The Retrievers and Terriers, the top two seeds in last year’s America East tournament will meet Jan. 25 in Baltimore and Feb. 22 in Boston.

Following the regular season, the 2012 America East Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship first, quarterfinal and semifinal round action will take place March 1-4 in West Hartford, Conn. for the third straight year. The title games will both be held the following week at the site of the highest remaining seeds. The men’s championship game will be on Saturday, March 10, with the women’s title tilt to be announced at a later date.

The league’s television schedule will be announced at a later date.
