Albany's Brooke Stanley has returned to form to lead the conference with 10.17 assists per set.
Bearcats & Great Danes Go Undefeated Last Week
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- Binghamton Bearcats Iva Partaleva (Kyustendil, Bulgaria/Seminole State College) and Amanda Dettmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) earned the America East Volleyball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, after leading their team to an undefeated week. University at Albany senior Brooke Stanley (Hendersonville, N.C./West Henderson) did the same for the Great Danes to take home the conference's Setter of the Week distinction for the period ending September 11.
Partaleva led the Bearcats to a first-place finish at the Rutgers Invitational last week, earning tournament MVP honors. The junior outside hitter finished the week with 3.94 kills and 4.56 points per set while hitting at a .382 clip in four matches. She added eight service aces, four blocks, four digs and four assists for the week.
Partaleva started the week hitting a blistering .556 with 11 kills in a home sweep of Siena on Wednesday. She broke out for 22 kills on .439 hitting with six aces as Binghamton grinded out a five-set victory over Howard in the weekend finale on Saturday evening. Partaleva recorded 63 terminations for the week after accumulating 51 kills in all of last season.
Dettmann, rookie setter, led the Bearcats to a 4-0 week in which the team hit .269 in four matches. She averaged 10.81 assists and 2.12 digs per set for the week, adding three blocks and five aces. The rookie also contributed 13 kills on a .520 hitting percentage.
Dettmann earned an all-tournament team selection at the Rutgers Invitational after averaging 10.31 assists per set over three matches. Her tournament performance included 54 assists, 19 digs and four kills in a four-set win over Princeton. Dettmann excecuted an offense that had four different players tally double-digits kills twice over the weekend.
Stanley picks up her first conference award since returning from an injury that sidelined her for the entire 2010 season. The 2009 Player and Setter of the Year led America East last week with 11.40 assists per set in three matches at Fordham's Rose Hill Classic, earning tournament MVP honors. Stanley also served up six aces, averaged 1.20 kills and 1.40 digs per set, and quarterbacked the Great Danes to a .264 team hitting percentage.
Stanley produced 37 assists, five kills and four digs in a three-set win over host Fordham on Friday night, then dished out a combined 77 assists in Saturday's wins over Pac-12 foe Colorado and cross-town rival Siena.
Albany (3-6 overall, 0-0 America East) went undefeated at Fordham's Rose Hill Classic, dropping just one set all weekend... The Great Danes defeated Fordham and Colorado by 3-0 scores, while posting a 3-1 win over crosstown-rival Siena... Junior outside hitter Dunja Prgomet (Rovinj, Croatia) was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.70 kills and 2.60 digs over the weekend.Prgomet reached double-digit kill totals in all three matches, and recorded a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs against Colorado... Senior setter Brooke Stanley (Hendersonville, N.C./West Henderson) was named the MVP of the tournament after quarterbacking the Great Danes to the tournament title. Stanley averaged 11.40 assists over the three matches, while Albany hit .264 as a team... In the finale against Siena, Stanley totaled 45 assists, six kills and eight digs, while hitting .308 and serving up four aces... Senior middle blocker Casey Wright (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) was also named to the all-tournament team. Wright averaged 3.20 kills and 0.50 blocks per set in the three matches... Albany will return to action at the Ohio State Sports Imports Classic over the weekend, taking on Akron, Maryland and the host Buckeyes.
Binghamton University (6-6, 0-0 AE) went 4-0 last week, climbing back to .500 after an 0-5 start... Prior to finishing in first place at the Rutgers Invitational, the Bearcats hosted Siena. Binghamton disposed of the Saints in straight sets led by sophomore middle Grace Vickers (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) who tallied 14 kills in the match... The Bearcats went 3-0 at the Rutgers Invitational, claiming a first place finish by defeating host Rutgers, Princeton and Howard... Junior outside hitter Iva Partaleva (Kyustendil, Bulgaria/Seminole St. College, Okla.) was named tournament MVP after averaging a weekend-best 4.00 kills per set and 4.62 points per set... Junior Alex Roland (Austin, Texas/Austin) and freshman Amanda Dettmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) joined Partaleva on the all-tournament team... Roland hit a tournament-best .370 while Dettmann tallied the second-most assists per set with 10.31... In two of Binghamton's three matches over the weekend four different players recorded double-digit kills... Binghamton returns to action next weekend at the Columbia Tournament in New York City... The Bearcats open up with host Columbia on Friday, Sept. 16 at noon then play St. John's at 5 p.m. The following day, Binghamton faces off against Iowa at 10 a.m. and then takes on St. Francis (N.Y.) at 5 p.m.
The Hawks (6-6, 0-0 AE) completed a five match week with a 4-1 overall record, with all four wins coming in three sets... The only setback of the week came in five sets against Navy in the first match of the Hartford/Quinnipiac invitational... Overall for the week, the Hawks hit .265, with all the credit belonging to freshman setter Jackie Tamburri (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson). Tamburri finished the week with 178 assists, averaging more than 10 assists per set. She also finished with 46 digs, fourth-most on the team... Including Tamburi, six Hawks finished the week with a hitting percentage better than .200... Junior outside hitter Kami Nethersole (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) led the team with 55 total kills, putting double-figure kills in all but one match all week. She also put up double figure digs in three matches, including tying her career-high with 17 against Navy... Among the top-four hitters last week, sophomore Lindsay Anderson (Crystal Lake, Ill.) led all with a .325 hitting percentage. She finished the week with 42 kills and 16 errors in 80 total attacks. Anderson led the Hawks in the loss against Navy with a career-high 13 kills and four errors for a .409 hitting percentage... The Hawks will play four matches this week, the first a dual match against Bryant. The Hawks scored a five-set victory against Bryant earlier this season at the Army Invitational... The Hawks will then travel to Philadelphia for the Lafayette/Lehigh cross-town invitational.
UMBC (8-4, 0-0 AE) went 3-1 last week, including 2-1 in the third annual Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament at home... Freshman Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) and sophomore Hallie Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) were named to the All-Tournament Team... Schmidt now has 143 kills on the season (3.58 kps), while Carter is second on the team with 2.78 kills per set and 2.97 digs per set... Senior Allie Spaay (Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) directs the offense with 9.43 assists per set and leads the team with 14 aces (0.35 aps)... Freshman Dalton Tolliver (Ortonville, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) and junior Katie Kelly (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar) lead the blocking with 1.20 and 1.15 blocks per set, respectively... The New Hampshire volleyball team (0-11, 0-0 AE) dropped four matches during the week, falling at Northeastern before hosting Indiana State, Fairfield and Connecticut at the Holly Young Invitational... Junior Jansan Falcusan (Plymouth, Mich.) registered a double-double against Northeastern with 18 assists and 10 digs... Senior Lauren Laquerre (Concord, N.H.) paced the Wildcats at the Holly Young Invitational over the weekend with double-double performances in all three matches. The New Hampshire native totaled 12 kills and 14 digs against Indiana State, 15 kills and 11 digs against Fairfield and 10 kills and 12 digs against Connecticut. She was named to the all-tournament team following the final match... Falcusan added 35 assists against Fairfield to go along with senior Amy Keding's (Northbrook, Ill.) 15 kills and 10 digs... Providence College (4-8, 0-0 AE) went 2-2 on the week… It dropped the home-opener to Brown in four sets. Senior MB Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) did her best to keep the Friars in it, posting 11 kills on a .320 hitting percentage. The Friars also got six kills each from senior Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) and freshman Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill./Nazareth Academy)… Providence then hosted the Eighth Annual Friar Classic September 9-10, opening with a three-set win over St. Francis (N.Y.)… Fletcher notched 14 kills on 18 attempts, without committing an error, good for a .778 hitting percentage… Freshman Anna Russian (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) added eight kills… Providence came back Saturday morning to sweep Coppin State. Fletcher was again impressive, notching 15 kills while hitting .417… Hendel added seven kills, as did freshman Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.)… Senior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif./Redwood) served up 31 assists, while sophomore libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) recorded 21 digs…The Friars dropped the final match to Lafayette, 3-0… Fletcher recorded eight kills while senior Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) added seven…Fletcher and Muzzonigro earned spots on the Friar Classic All-Tournament Teams…Fletcher notched 37 kills in the tournament (4.11 per set), while Muzzonigro picked-up 53 digs (5.89 per set)…The Friars return to action Friday-Saturday, September 16-17, at the Dartmouth Invitational.
The Seawolves (3-6, 0-0 AE) won two of their three matches at the CCSU Invitational over the week... The Seawolves swept Bucknell and St. Peter's before falling to the host Blue Devils in four sets in the final match... Senior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) and freshman Laura Hathaway (Warsaw, N.Y.) were named to the All-Tournament team... Nelson had 15 kills and hit .609 in the win over St. Peter's... Hathaway had a career-high 23 digs in four sets against CCSU... The Seawolves hit a season-high .255 against St. Peter's... Sophomore Evann Slaughter (Clinton, Md.) had a combined 12 block assists in the three matches at the CCSU Invitational... Nelson averaged 5.0 points per set for the weekend...
