Keding, Hovie & Falcusan's Impressive Numbers Garner Awards
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- A pair of University of New Hampshire volleyball players secured weekly awards with a week full of double doubles, while Binghamton University freshman Kristin Hovie (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) set a program record to earn the America East Rookie of the Week. UNH senior Amy Keding (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) took the Player of the Week honor and teammate junior Jansan Falcusan (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth-Salem) grabbed the Setter of the Week accolade.
Keding collected two double doubles last week to help the Wildcats earn a split in two matches. The senior averaged 4.00 kills, 4.60 digs and 4.30 points per set and added five blocks. In a five-set thriller against Providence, Keding finished with 20 kills and 23 digs, as well three blocks and an assist. In a non-conference win over Holy Cross earlier in the week, she tallied 16 kills, 19 digs, a solo block and a block assist, to go along with .256 hitting. For the season, Keding now has 3.19 kills and 3.64 points per set, including 3.80 kills and 4.19 points per set in America East matches.
Hovie averaged an impressive 4.57 kills and a league-leading 5.14 points per set in Binghamton's 1-1 week. In a sweep of Stony Brook on Friday, the rookie tallied eight kills, two digs, two blocks and two aces. Hovie saved her best performance for Sunday where she set a Binghamton freshman record of 24 kills against UMBC. She added five digs and two blocks on .276 hitting against the Retrievers. During her first collegiate campaign, Hovie has 2.78 kills, 1.52 digs per set and 39 blocks.
Falcusan was the quarterback behind New Hampshire's 1-1 week with 12.10 assists per game and two double-double performances. The junior also compiled 3.11 digs per set, three blocks and an ace, while helping the Wildcats' to a .232 team hitting percentage. Against Holy Cross, Falcusan orchestrated the offense to a .236 hitting percentage and posted a match-high 46 assists to go along with 16 digs. On Sunday against Providence, she registered a season-high 62 assists and added 12 digs for her fourth double double in as many matches and eighth of the season. Falcusan's best matches this season have been in conference play, averaging 10.9 assists and 2.49 digs per set against America East opponents.
Albany (15-8, 8-1 AE) recorded it's third and fourth straight three-set sweep, and 11th win in the last 12 matches with victories over UMBC and Stony Brook over the weekend... Senior libero Laurie Gonzalez (Carolina, Puerto Rico/St. Francis School) became Albany's all-time digs leader on Friday, surpassing Ashley DeNeal '06... Senior Casey Wright (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) averaged 3.83 kills per set, while hitting .500 in the two matches to pace the Albany offense... Dunja Prgomet (Rovinj, Croatia) recorded the best all-around weekend, averaging 2.83 kills and 2.83 digs per set, while also serving up three aces and one solo block... Senior setter Brooke Stanley (Hendersonville, N.C./West Henderson) averaged 10.50 assists and 2.50 digs, while quarterbacking the Great Danes to a .302 hitting percentage... Juniors Traci Vandegrift (Mogadore, Ohio/Field) and Gabby Whitworth (Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo) have been playing consistently strong for the Great Danes... Vandegrift averaged 2.50 kills on .321 hitting, while Whitworth finished with 1.33 kills on .353 hitting... Albany hosts crosstown-rival Siena in the fourth annual Dig Pink match on Wednesday before visiting Providence on Sunday.
Binghamton University (11-16, 3-6 AE) earned a big victory over Stony Brook last Friday, before falling to UMBC on Sunday... The Bearcats defeated the Seawolves in straight sets led by junior middle Alex Roland (Austin, Tex/Austin High), who tallied ten kills and a hitting percentage of .529... Freshman setter Amanda Dettmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Holy Divine Savior Angels) handed out 35 assists in just three sets to help Binghamton to a .231 hitting clip... In the Bearcats' second match of the weekend the Retrievers were able to overpower Binghamton in the fourth set to win an important conference matchup... Freshman hitter Kristin Hovie (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) had a historic day putting down 24 kills, setting a Binghamton freshman record... Dettmann posted a double-double of 39 assists and 11 digs... Binghamton is in a tie for fifth in the America East standings with UMBC... The Bearcats travel to Providence on Fri. Nov. 4 to take on the Friars at 7 p.m.
The Hawks (12-14, 3-5 AE) split two matches last week, falling to Central Connecticut, 2-3, and then sweepting Providence... Hartford sent its seniors off in impressive fashion with a three-set (25-20, 25-22, 25-21) win over Providence in a key America East match-up as the seven league teams volley for one of four positions in the upcoming America East Championship... Michelle Cordell and junior Kami Nethersole led all players in the match as the only two with double figure kills, each with 11... The Hawks as a team hit .207 for the match, combining for 47 kills and 24 errors in 111 total attempts. Freshman setter Jackie Tamburri led the way for the Hawks with a .667 hitting average not hitting into an error in six attempts, and finishing with four kills... Cordell finished with a .333 average with four errors in 21 total attempts... Earlier in the week, the Hawks dropped their final non-conference match of the season in five sets at in-state rival Central Connecticut State University (15-9 overall) on Wednesday afternoon... Despite the loss, Tamburri became the third player in school history to pass 1,000 assists in a single season since the start of rally scoring.
UMBC (13-11, 3-6) split its weekend road trip, falling to Albany 3-0 Friday evening, but defeating Binghamton 3-1 Sunday afternoon… Three Retrievers notched double-digit kills against the Bearcats with Emily Vandegrift (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) leading the way with 14… Vandegrift picked up her first double-double of the season with her 10 digs… Senior Allie Spaay picked up her 12th double-double of the season with her 42 assists and 11 digs on Sunday… Senior Iman Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) and freshman Dalton Tolliver (Ortonville, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) each made 11 kills against Binghamton… Sophomore Ali Goc (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/R.S. McLaughlin Collegiate) registered 22 digs in the two matches while Hallie Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif/Edison) picked up 20 digs… The Retrievers head home for two America East contests with New Hampshire coming to Baltimore on Friday afternoon and Hartford making the visit on Sunday.
UNH (8-17, 6-2 AE) split a pair of matches on the week, topping non-conference opponent Holy Cross 3-1 before falling to Providence in five sets... Against Holy Cross, senior Amy Keding (Northbrook, Ill.) racked up 16 kills and 19 digs as one of three Wildcats to finish with a double-double in the match... Senior Lauren Laquerre (Concord, N.H.) posted 13 kills and 10 digs, while junior Jansan Falcusan (Plymouth, Mich.) registered 47 assists and 16 digs... Senior Jessy Dick (Lethbridge, Alberta) also earned double-digit kills with 11 for a .391 attack percentage, while freshman Delaney Dameron (Alpharetta, Ga.) set season-highs with 10 kills and a match-high five blocks. Defensively, Sam Henke (Millersville, Md.) led all players with a season-best 24 digs and also added three service aces... In the team's home finale against Providence, Laquerre posted a season-high 23 kills to go along with 14 digs, while Keding and Falcusan also added double-doubles... Sophomore Morgan Thatcher (Brockton, Mass.) registered 16 kills and paced the team with a .368 attack percentage... The Wildcats return to action next week with a pair of road matches, traveling to UMBC on Nov. 4 and Stony Brook on Nov. 6.
The Friars (8-18, 2-6 AE) recorded a 1-1 record last week, including a five-set victory over New Hampshire on October 30. It marked the Wildcats' second loss of the season in America East play... During the match against UNH, several Friars recorded career highs, including Lauren Hendel (21 kills), Carly Morrison (64 assists) and Cassie Muzzonigro (32 digs)... Lauren Fletcher led the Friars in the match with 22 kills and a blistering .341 hitting percentage... The victory also marked the second win all-time vs. New Hampshire, since joining the league a season ago.
The Seawolves (12-11, 5-4) dropped matches to Binghamton and Albany over the weekend... The loss to Binghamton snapped a four-match winning streak for the Seawolves... Senior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) led Stony Brook with 19 kills against Binghamton. She added 10 digs against the Bearcats for her 12th double-double of the season. Nelson also hit .326 for the match... Freshman Laura Hathaway (Warsaw, N.Y.) led SBU with 11 kills... The Seawolves return home for their final home matches of the season this weekend... SBU will take on Hartford on Friday before facing off against New Hampshire on Sunday... The Seawolves will honor their four seniors- Nelson, Kelsey Sullivan (Hamilton, Va.), Jen Cunningham (Little Neck, N.Y.) and Masa Balandzic (Pljevlja, Montenegro)- prior to Sunday's match.
