Men's Hoops Teams Go 3-1 on Sunday With Albany, Boston U. and Maine Winning
America East teams had a strong weekend going 5-2 over the past two days, including 3-1 on Sunday. Albany, Boston U. and Maine all picked up victories.
Albany, which has won back-to-back games and three of their last four, closed the first half on a 13-0 run to open a big lead on Fairleigh Dickinson and didn't look back in a 82-61 win. Gerardo Suero led four Great Danes in twin figures with 23 points, his fourth straight game eclipsing the 20-point mark. Logan Aronhalt added 15 while Blake Metcalf had a career-high 14 on 7-of-7 shooting and Jayson Guerrier added 13. Albany, which got 37 points from its bench, shot 49 percent for the game.
Boston U. posted its second straight win at the Legends Classic, defeating Hofstra, 68-61. The Terriers, who had dropped four straight to start the season, outscored the Pride, 21-7, down the stretch to earn the win. Darryl Partin, who has scored 20-plus points in five of his six games this season, had a team-high 25 points. Patrick Hazel recorded his first career double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) and D.J. Irving added 15 points.
After nine days off, Maine returned to action and posted a 72-60 victory over Holy Cross. The Black Bears, which scored 20 points off 17 Crusader turnovers, used a 19-2 run that bridged the two halves to erase a 12-point deficit. Freshman Justin Edwards scored 20-plus points for the third straight game and finished with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Gerald McLemore added 18 and Alasdair Fraser had 12.
Also on Sunday, Binghamton fell at #21 Missouri, 88-59. The Tigers shot 56 percent from the floor and won the turnover battle, 22-6. Ben Dickinson led four Bearcats in double figures with 15 points to go with seven rebounds. Jimmy Gray (13 points), Chris Longoria (12) and Robert Mansell (11) also had twin digits.
On Monday, UMBC visits Rutgers in the lone game of the day. Tip time is 7:30 p.m. The Retrievers are still in search of their first win of 2011-12.
