BOSTON - After day one of the America East Swimming and Diving Championship, UMBC and Boston University have early leads. The four-day meet kicked off this evening at the Boston University Aquatic Center.

On the women's side, UMBC and Boston U. each racked up 74 points to head into day two tied atop the team standings. New Hampshire follows in a close third with 64 points with Vermont right behind with 58 points. Stony Brook sits in fifth with 56 points ahead of Maine (54 points) and Binghamton (48).

In men's action, UMBC jumped out to an early lead with 111 points. Stony Brook sits right behind in second place with 89 points. Maine collected 72 points on day one while Boston University (62 points) and Binghamton (61) round out the field.

The Retriever men rode a strong effort in the one-meter dive to their opening day lead. Andrew Eckhoff captured gold scoring 272.55 points while teammate Pak Wang earned the silver with 250.10 points. Eckhoff finished second in the same event at last season's championship. UMBC's 200 yard medley relay team also won gold in a time of 1:30.58.

Boston U. claimed victory in the 800 yard freestyle relay - the only other event scored on the men's side Thursday. The team of Cole Puchi, Andy Vazquez, Connor Stuewe and Jeffrey Thomas raced to a pool record time of 6:36.92 to get the win.

Stony Brook posted a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay and a third-place showing in the 800 freestyle relay to set itself up in good position for day two.

On the women's side UMBC and Boston split the relays and will head into day two deadlocked. The Terriers won the first event of the evening, taking the top spot in the 800 freestyle relay touching the wall in 7:23.45. UMBC finished a close second. In the 200 medley relay, the Retrievers came from behind to snatch the win from the Terriers after the final turn to score the win in 1:43.83.

Day two of the America East Swimming and Diving Championship gets underway with preliminary action starting at 10 a.m. on Friday.
