CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- It came down to the final day of the regular season, but the seeds and matchups for the 2012 America East Men's Basketball Championship are set following Sunday's action which saw Stony Brook claim the league's regular-season title and top seed for the upcoming tournament.

The 2012 America East Men's and Women's Basketball Championship presented by Newman's Own will be held March 1-4 in West Hartford, Conn. The first round will be played on Thursday, March 1, while four quarterfinal games are scheduled for Saturday, March 3 and two semifinal contests slated for Sunday, March 4. The championship game will take place on Saturday, March 10 at the highest remaining seed.

For the second straight year, UMBC (4-25, 3-13 AE) and Binghamton (1-28, 1-15 AE) will kick things off with first-round action on Thursday, March 1 at approximately 8:15 p.m. UMBC, the No. 8 seed, swept the regular-season series from Binghamton, the No. 9 seed.

The winner of that contest will advance to the quarterfinal round to face No. 1 Stony Brook (20-8, 14-2 AE) on Saturday, March 3 at 12:05 p.m. The Seawolves secured their second regular-season crown in three years with a 55-48 win over Maine Sunday. The win also assures SBU of a postseason berth as it will play in the NIT if it does not reach the NCAA Championship. The Seawolves swept the season set from both UMBC and Binghamton.

The second quarterfinal matchup will feature No. 4 Albany (18-13, 9-7 AE) against No. 5 New Hampshire (13-15, 7-9 AE) at approximately 2:15 p.m. The Great Danes locked the fourth slot with their win over Binghamton Thursday. It's the sixth time in 11 years Albany is seeded fourth or better. UNH earned the fifth spot by virtue of its 58-49 victory over the Bearcats Sunday, paired with the Black Bears' loss to the Seawolves. The Wildcats and Great Danes split the regular-season series, but UNH has won seven of the last 10 meetings overall.

Saturday's night session begins at 6:05 p.m. with No. 2 Vermont (20-8, 13-3 AE) facing No. 7 Maine (12-16, 6-10 AE). The Catamounts settled into the second position when Stony Brook beat the Black Bears. Three of the Catamounts' four America East titles have come when they were seeded second. The Black Bears closed their season with losses in six their last seven games to fall to the No. 7 spot. UVM swept the regular-season series from Maine.

Rounding out quarterfinal action will be No. 3 Boston University (16-15, 12-4 AE) battling No. 6 Hartford (8-21, 7-9 AE) at approximately 8:15 p.m. The two teams will be meeting in the tournament for the third straight season and fourth in the last five. The Terriers secured the No. 3 seed for the fifth time since 2005 by going 12-4 in conference play for the second straight year. The host Hawks, who have won four of their last six games, finished tied for fifth with UNH, but lost the tiebreaker due to the Wildcats' win over Vermont. Boston U. has won four straight against Hartford, including both regular-season games this year.

The four quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinal round on Sunday, March 4. The Stony Brook-first round game winner will face the winner of Albany-New Hampshire at 5:02 p.m. while the Vermont-Maine winner will take on the Boston U.-Hartford winner at approximately 7:15 p.m. The two semifinal winners will then decide the 2012 America East men's basketball champion on Saturday, March 10 on the campus of the highest remaining seed at 11:02 a.m.
