CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Albany and Boston University kicked off their 2012 softball seasons this weekend and a player from both teams earned America East softball weekly awards. The Great Danes' Charlise Castro earned Player of the Week honors while the Terrier's Holli Floetker, the reigning America East Pitcher of the Year, garnered Pitcher of the Week honors. Additionally UMBC's Taylor Hall picked up Rookie of the Week recognition. The awards for the week ending Feb. 26 were announced Monday afternoon.

Castro (Saugerties, N.Y.) led Albany to two wins in five games by hitting .533 (8-for-15) with five extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs and two doubles last week. The sophomore first baseman also drove in six runs, scored five and racked up a 1.133 slugging percentage.

Floetker (Fountain Valley, Calif.) picked up where she left off last year, going 3-1 in four appearances. She allowed eight runs in 24 innings of work (3.00 ERA) and struck out 13. The sophomore right-hander hurled a gem against Winthrop, firing a complete-game, three-hit shutout against Winthrop to lead the Terriers to a 3-0 win Saturday.

Hall (Cosby, Va.) batted .500 (6-for-12) in four games and drove in three runs last week to earn Rookie of the Week honors. She led the Retrievers to their lone win of the week, a 14-9 victory over Radford on Saturday. The freshman catcher/designated player had two hits in the game including a double, and all three of her RBIs.

Albany (2-3)
finished the Eagle Classic at 2-3 with wins over Jacksonville State, 6-5, and Radford, 9-2 ... Head coach Chris Cannata moves within one win away of 500 career wins as a head coach at UAlbany ... Junior Kylie Apostolina (Smyrna, Del./ Smyrna) and Freshman Charlise Castro (Saugerties, N.Y./ Kingston) were named to the Eagle Classic All-Tournament Team as they combined for three homers and eight RBIs ... Castro led the Great Danes in almost every hitting category during the tournament, Batting Avg. (.533), Runs (5), Hits (8), 2B(3), HR(2), and RBIs (6) ... Sophomore Brittany McFawn (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek) had a quality start against North Florida, pitching six innings allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out nine ... She pitched a no-decision against Jacksonville State going four innings and allowing just one run on four hits ... Allie Weiser (Wildwood Crest, N.J./ Wildwood Catholic) received the win against Jacksonville State, pitching three innings of relief giving up four run on four hits and striking out one ... Brittany Schwieger (Orangevale, Calif/ Sacramento City College) recorded her first victory as a Great Danes against Radford, pitching seven innings of two-run ball while striking out seven and scattering three hits ... The Great Danes will have two weeks off before traveling to Rock HIll, S.C. for the Adidas Invitational ... The tournament will consist of Campell University, George Washington, Winthrop University (host), and UNC-Wilmington

Binghamton (2-3) was idle this week and will travel to the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic, hosted by Texas Tech this weekend.

Boston U. (3-2) went 3-2 in opening weekend at NFCA Leadoff Classic...Sophomore Megan Volpano led team with .400 batting average and tied for team-lead with classmate Chelsea O'Connor with 6 RBIs...O'Connor and junior Emily Roesch each hit a home run while O'Connor led team with two doubles...Sophomore Holli Floetker went 3-1 for the weekend including a shutout against Winthrop

After having the past two weeks off, Maine (1-4) returns with eight games in this upcoming week as they will travel to Fullerton and Riverside, California for a pair of tournaments ... Sophomore catcher/designated player Jean Stevens (Albany, Ore.) leads the Maine offense as she is currently batting .500 with two RBIs, two runs scored, two home runs and a double thus far ... Freshman catcher EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) led the Maine rookie's as she batted .333, going 4-for-12 with a double and an RBI in Maine's first five games ... Junior hurler Beth Spoehr (Appleton, Wis.) picked up Maine's lone win in week one as she threw a complete game shutout to defeat Long Island 1-0. Spoehr gave up just three hits with seven strikeouts in the win.

Playing at the Charleston Southern Tournament, UMBC (2-6) went 1-3 against Charleston Southern, Wright State and Hampton... After dropping the first three games of the tournament, the Retrievers came back to defeat Hampton, 14-9, on Sunday afternoon... Trailing, 9-7, going into the ninth inning, UMBC rallied for seven runs to steal the win... Sophomore Jessica Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) hit .615 (8-for-13) over the course of the weekend with three extra base hits while scoring four runs and driving in one run... Freshman Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) continues to impress, hitting .500 (6-for12) in the two-day weekend tournament... Hall picked up three extra base hits, driving in three runs and scoring one run as well... UMBC returns to Maryland to take on local rival Towson on Wednesday… First pitch in Towson between the Retrievers and Tigers is scheduled for 2 p.m.
