CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A trio of UMBC Retrievers have been named America East Performers of the Week after the squad’s meet against Navy. Also earning recognition for her performance is New Hampshire junior Jennifer Roberts, who takes home female Swimmer of the Week honors after helping the Wildcats beat Vermont. Freshman Corinna Darelius is the female Diver of the Week, while teammates Mohamed Hussein and Andrew Eckhoff collect male Swimmer of the Week and Diver of the Week honors, respectively.
Roberts (Springvale, Maine) won four events on the day, three of which were individual. In the 200 individual medley event, Roberts set a Vermont pool record en route to the gold with a time of 2:06.21. She was also tops in the 200 free (1:53.57) and the 100 free (52.47) in addition to helping the Wildcats’ 400 free relay quartet to a victory. New Hampshire won over its America East rival, 188-114. Roberts begins her first season with the Wildcats, after competing at the University of Maryland for the past two seasons.
The second freshman in as many weeks to be named a Performer of the Week, Darelius (Rye, N.Y.) swept the diving events against Navy in just her second collegiate meet. In the one meter event, Darelius scored 234.90, while collecting a score of 229.43 in the three meter dive. The wins were her first ever for the Retrievers, which fell to Navy 164-136.
Hussein (Cairo, Egypt) continued his domination as a UMBC swimmer, winning three individual events and anchoring the winning 400 free relay squad against Navy. The owner of the Egyptian record in the 200 individual medley, Hussein won his signature event against the Midshipmen with a time of 1:52.81. He also claimed gold in the 100 fly (51.11) and the 200 free (1:41.60). The senior has won six individual events through his first two meets, while helping UMBC win two relay events as well.
Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass.) begins his season with two consecutive Diver of the Week nods after winning the three meter dive against Navy. His score of 295.12 was tops for the second straight week. Eckhoff also was second in the one meter dive as he and Hussein helped UMBC beat Navy for the first time since 2004. This marks the eighth time in the past two years that Eckhoff has been the Diver of the Week.
No other America East teams were in action this week, but the slate is full for the coming weekend with five of the six schools competing. Maine will kick things off on Friday, traveling to Rhode Island for its season opener. On Saturday, Binghamton will host Boston U., UMBC travels to George Washington and New Hampshire will pay a visit to Northeastern.
