Hussein and Roberts Repeat as Weekly Award Winners
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC senior Mohamed Hussein and New Hampshire junior Jennifer Roberts have earned America East male and female Swimmer of the Week honors for the second consecutive week. Joining them in this week’s awards is a pair of Maine divers. Junior Travis Wibby is the male Diver of the Week while classmate Kara Capossela earns the same honor on the women’s side.
Hussein (Cairo, Egypt) has had an excellent start to his senior campaign, winning nine individual races through the team’s first three meets. He continued to dominate this weekend against George Washington, winning the 50 free (21.15), the 100 free (46.26) and the 200 IM (1:53.47). In addition to being atop the podium for those three events, Hussein helped the 200 medley relay team to a first place finish. The Retrievers swam past George Washington, 148-99.
In her first season as an America East swimmer, Roberts (Springvale, Maine) is off to an impressive start. The junior won three more events this weekend against Northeastern, including the 100 fly (56.51), 200 fly (2:02.99) and the 200 IM (2:05.71). Roberts owns the fastest time in all three of those events among America East female swimmers so far this season. Her efforts helped New Hampshire beat Northeastern 165-135.
Wibby (South Portland, Maine), takes home his first Diver of the Week honors of the season after Maine's meet against Rhode Island. The junior finished second in both the one-meter (224.85) and the three-meter (190.42) diving events. The Black Bears handled Rhode Island easily, winning 202-88.
In her first competition of the year, Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) had an nice showing in both diving events. The junior was first in the three-meter dive with a score of 249.15 and second in the one-meter dive, scoring 246.29. Her efforts were not enough to give the Black Bears a victory, however, as Rhode Island was victorious, 155-143.
In other swimming and diving action this weekend, the Boston U. men and women beat Binghamton. The meet was the first of the year for the Bearcats and the second of the year for the Terriers. The UMBC women paired with the men to sweep George Washington, winning 138-119. Vermont was off this weekend.
It will be a busy upcoming week for America East swimming and diving, with all but one team in action. Maine kicks everything off, hosting Bryant on Thursday. On Friday, Binghamton hosts Massachusetts, Maine visits will take on Boston College and Liberty in Chesnut Hill, Mass. and the New Hampshire women are in Smithfield, R.I. taking on Bryant and Central Connecticut. Things wrap up on Saturday with Boston U. at Fordham and Vermont traveling to Siena.
