CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A busy weekend for America East swimming and diving saw three UMBC athletes come away with weekly honors after their stellar performances. Mohamed Hussein hauled in Male Swimmer of the Week honors, while teammates Andrew Eckhoff and Katie Bean reigned supreme on the boards, earning Male and Female Diver of the Week accolades respectively. Joining the three Retrievers this week is New Hampshire’s Katie Mann, who has been named the Female Swimmer of the Week.

The Male Swimmer of the Week for the third time this season, Hussein (Cairo, Egypt) raced to three first-place finishes on the day. The first two were of the individual variety, as the senior won the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.09 and set a UMBC pool record in the 200 IM, touching the wall first in just 1:51.92. Hussein’s 200 IM time is also the fastest in the conference this year by nearly five seconds. In addition to his individual wins, Hussein also anchored a 200 medley relay victory for the Retrievers, who beat Howard 127-111.

Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass.) has also earned his third weekly award of the season, as the senior dominated the boards against Howard. He now owns the top conference score in both the one and three-meter dives in 2012-13, setting the one-meter mark on Saturday with a score of 318.60. Eckhoff also won the three-meter dive versus Howard with a score of 295.80.

Mann (Prince George, British Columbia) earned four wins versus Rhode Island this weekend en route to her first weekly honors of the season. The sophomore touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.74), the 200 breast (2:19.71) and the 200 IM (2:06.54). Mann’s time in the 200 breast is now the top mark in the conference for 2012-13. She was also a part of a 400 medley relay quartet which broke the Swasey Pool record with a time of 3:53.46. Mann’s efforts helped the Wildcats defeat Rhode Island, 161-121.

Rounding out the awards this week is Bean (Mechanicsville, Va.), who earned her first two wins of the season on the boards. The sophomore swept the diving events, scoring 254.32 in the one-meter and 232.05 in the three-meter. Bean’s efforts in the one-meter dive are now tops in the conference this season. UMBC beat Howard 125-104.

Elsewhere in the conference, Vermont’s Christa Weaver (South Burlington, Vt.) had a big day for the Catamounts, winning three individual events as a part of a 160-137 win over the Maine women. The Black Bears got a strong showing on the boards from Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) in the loss. Binghamton saw its women earn a victory over Drexel, while the men suffered a narrow defeat. Rounding out the action was Boston U., which saw both its men and women fall to Brown.

Four schools will see action this weekend, including some big invitational events. UMBC will get things started on Thursday, taking part in the George Mason Patriot Invitational that will run until Saturday. Boston U. will send its divers to the Rutgers Invitational, which will run from Friday to Sunday, while the swimmers will stay home to host the Terrier Invitational. Vermont will round out the weekend by hosting Central Connecticut St. on Saturday.
