CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Four familiar faces have earned America East weekly swimming and diving awards after a busy weekend in the pool. Three UMBC Retrievers have been honored after participating in the George Mason Patriot Invitational: Pierre De Waal is the Male Swimmer of the Week while Andrew Eckhoff and Katie Bean are the Male and Female Divers of the Week, respectively. Rounding out the crew is Vermont’s Christa Weaver, who takes home Female Swimmer of the Week honors after a two meet week.

De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa) picks up his second Swimmer of the Week award on the season. The senior had a strong showing amongst a talented field at the Patriot Invitational, touching the wall first in two events while earning silver in two more. De Waal won both the 200 fly (1:48.29) and the 500 free (4:31.62) by setting conference best times for the season. Additionally, he hauled in a silver medal in the 200 free with a time of 1:40.42, while also helping the 800 free relay quartet to a second place finish. De Waal’s efforts helped UMBC to a third-place finish out of eight teams.

The Male Diver of the Week for the fourth time this year, Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass.) swept the diving events at the Patriot Invitational. The senior was the top diver in both the prelims and finals of both events, scoring 275.85 in the one-meter finals and 297.20 in the three-meter finals. Eckhoff has now been named the Diver of the Week 10 times over the past two years.

Weaver (South Burlington, Vt.) had a monster weekend for the Catamounts, winning five individual races and playing a part in two relay victories across two meets. The freshman led things off on Saturday by winning the 50 free (24.33) and the 100 free (52.67) and also swimming leadoff for the winning 400 free relay squad. Vermont beat Central Connecticut St. in that meet, 184-116. To follow up that effort, Weaver would sweep the freestyle races against Bryant, winning the 50 (24.60), the 100 (52.86) and the 200 (1:55.15). Weaver also swam a leg for the 400 relay squad, as it won for the second consecutive day. After Vermont’s 146.5-115.5 win over Bryant, Weaver had run her win total up to 16 for the season.

Earning Female Diver of the Week honors for the second consecutive week, Bean (Mechanicsville, Va.) was the top UMBC finisher in both diving events while facing a talented field. Bean took sixth in the one-meter dive with a score of 202.7 before registering a 230.9 in the finals of the three-meter dive. UMBC was fifth at the Patriot Invitational with 430 points.

Elsewhere in the America East this weekend, four schools were in action. The Binghamton men took fifth at the Bucknell Invitational while the women claimed sixth. Freshman Brian McKenna (Flushing, N.Y.) had the only Binghamton win between the men and women, touching the wall first in the 50 free with a time of 20.69. Boston U. sent its divers to the Frank Elm Invitational hosted by Rutgers, with Melinda Matyas (Budapest, Hungary) finishing third on the one meter boards. Meanwhile, the Terrier swimmers stayed home to host the Terrier Invitational. Connor Stuewe (Monterey, Calif.) had a strong showing, including a win in the 200 backstroke.

America East swimming and diving will take the weekend off, with the action picking up in the following week. Vermont will be the first team to get back in action, as the women will travel to Dartmouth on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
