Big Men Nwakamma, Warney Power Way to Men's Hoops Weekly Honors
University of Hartford's Mark Nwakamma averaged 20 points and eight rebounds last week and had a career day to lead his team to a win Saturday en route to earning Player of the Week honors. Stony Brook University's Jameel Warney picked up Rookie of the Week accolades for the second time in three weeks after leading his team to a win over Canisius Saturday and putting up impressive numbers in a loss to nationally-ranked UConn on Sunday.
Nwakamma (Leander, Texas) scored a career-best 24 points to go with seven rebounds and a career-high five assists in an 80-77 win over Central Connecticut State on Saturday to earn his first career Player of the Week award. The sophomore forward, who averaged 20 points, eight rebounds and three assists for the week, shot 10-of-17 from the field in leading the Hawks to their first win over the Blue Devils since 1998. An America East All-Rookie choice last year, Nwakamma also had 16 points, nine boards and a pair of blocks in a loss to La Salle on Tuesday. For the season, Nwakamma, the first Hawk to claim weekly recognition since Morgan Sabia on Jan. 10, 2011, is averaging 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds, good for third and tied for seventh among league leaders.
Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) had the best game of his young career, scoring a career-best 18 points to go with seven rebounds in a 82-75 win over previously unbeaten Canisius Saturday to claim his second Rookie of the Week honor of the season. The freshman forward, who averaged 13.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks for the week, then scored eight points to go with a game and career-high 11 boards, two blocks and as many steals as Stony Brook took #21/23 UConn to the brink before falling 73-62 in its second game in as many days. Warney, who is averaging 10.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, is the first Seawolf to earn multiple Rookie of the Week honors in a season since Tommy Brenton and Bryan Dougher both accomplished the feat during the 2008-09 season.
