Dominating Performances By Edwards and Watson Jr. Lead to MBB Weekly Honors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Two guards that led their teams to wins with dominating performances are this week's America East men's basketball Players of the Week. The award winners for the week ending Dec. 2 were announced Monday afternoon.

University of Maine's Justin Edwards tallied the league's first 30-point game since February en route to earning America East Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. Boston University's Maurice Watson, Jr. averaged 18.0 points and 5.0 assists in leading his team to its first two wins of the season last week to garner Rookie of the Week accolades.

Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) picked up Player of the Week recognition after averaging 24.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.0 steals over two games last week. The sophomore guard carried Maine to a 76-73 win at Northeastern on Wednesday as he scored a career-best 30 points on 11-of-12 shooting from the floor to go with five rebounds and three steals. He then had 19 points, eight assists, five boards and three thefts in a loss to Duquesne Saturday. For the week, Edwards, an America East all-rookie choice last year, shot 68 percent from the floor (19-for-28). Edwards ranks fourth among league leaders in scoring (16.6 ppg), leads the league in steals (2.9 spg) and is sixth in assists (4.0 apg).

Watson, Jr. (Landsdowne, Pa.) led the Terriers to a pair of wins with two solid performances to earn his first career Rookie of the Week award, including a 21-point, seven-assist, four-steal outing in Saturday's win at St. Peter's. The freshman guard also had 15 points and three assists in a win over Coastal Carolina earlier in the week. For the season, Watson, Jr. is averaging 10.4 points, good for 18th in the conference, and a league-best 5.1 assists.
