Hartford, UMBC Advance to Tournament Finals; Six Games on Saturday

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Six America East teams are in action on Saturday as teams head down the final stretch of non-conference play before America East conference games begin on Jan. 2. Hartford (9-3) and UMBC (4-8) both move on to their respective tournament finals with wins on Friday afternoon. The Hawks beat UMES, 53-38, in the Terrapin Classic, and will battle No. 9/9 Maryland in the final at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Hartford held UMES to a season-low 38 points. Nikki Smith led Hartford with 14 points, while Daphne Elliott added 12. UMBC broke its five-game losing streak with a 48-43 win over Wagner in the Hawk Classic. The Retrievers take on St. Joe's in the tournament final at 2 p.m. on Friday. Brittany Crowell and Kristin Coles combined for 31 of UMBC's 48 points. Crowell had a game-high 21, including eight-straight during a 12-0 run by the Retrievers that turned a seven-point second half deficit into a five-point lead. Four more America East teams return from break on Saturday, including Boston U. (8-3) putting its five-game winning streak on the line against Fairleigh Dickinson in the Christmas City Classic. Binghamton also plays in the Christmas City Classic against Lehigh.
