Iati, Edwards, Reed Rewarded for Performance with Final Men's Hoops Awards of 2012
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Two standouts who led their teams to wins with prolific offensive performances split this week's America East's Player of the Week honor, while one of the top freshmen in the country earned Rookie of the Week honors for the third time this season. The final weekly awards of 2012, for the games ending Dec. 30, were announced Monday afternoon.
University at Albany's Jacob Iati and University of Maine's Justin Edwards each scored 26 points to lead their teams to wins last week and are Co-Players of the Week as a result, while Binghamton University's Jordan Reed averaged a double-double to earn Rookie of the Week accolades.
Iati (York, Pa.) scored a career-high 26 points in Albany's 71-61 win over Navy Friday to earn Player of the Week accolades for the second time this season and third time in his career. The senior guard sparked the Great Dane offense by accounting for over of third of its total scoring output in the win, Albany's seventh in its last eight games. Iati, who ranks among the nation's best in made three-pointers (48) and three-point percentage (.480), shot 8-of-13 from the floor and 6-of-11 from long range. The sharpshooter, who ranks fifth among league leaders in scoring (16.2 ppg), also added two rebounds, an assist and a steal in the victory over the Midshipmen.
Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) led the Black Bears to their second straight win en route to earning Player of the Week honors for the second straight week and third time this season. The sophomore guard scored a game-high 26 points and added five rebounds, four assists and three steals in Maine's 76-71 win at Quinnipiac Saturday. Edwards, who is averaging 25.3 ppg over his last three games, shot 10-of-16 from the floor. He leads America East in scoring (18.5 ppg) and steals (2.2 spg), while ranking sixth in assists (3.9 apg) and 16th in rebounding (5.4 rpg.)
Reed (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded his sixth and seventh double-doubles of the season while averaging 16.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in a pair of games last week to earn Rookie of the Week honors. The freshman guard scored 10 points and added 11 rebounds against Colgate Friday and followed that performance with a game-high 23 points and 14 boards against Cornell Sunday. For the season, Reed paces America East and ranks 17th nationally in rebounding (10.3 rpg) and is second among league leaders in scoring (17.3 ppg). He is one of just 20 players in the nation and the lone guard to average a double-double.
