America East's top two teams in the men's basketball standings helped ring in the new year as Albany won its final game of 2012 Monday, while Stony Brook plays the first game of 2013 Tuesday, a game that will air on ESPN3 and WatchESPN
Albany (11-3) won for the eighth time in nine games by knocking off Brown, 57-50. The Great Danes sank 20-of-27 free throws to edge the Bears, who were coming off a win over Providence. Jacob Iati (16 points), Luke Devlin (15) and Mike Black (14) combined for 45 of the team's 57 points. The Great Danes will enter league play with 11 victories, their most before January at the Division I level.
Stony Brook (8-4) visits Manhattan for a 2 p.m. contest that will be carried on ESPN3 and WatchESPN. This is only the second all-time meeting between the two programs. The Seawolves, whose 8-4 mark is their best through 12 games as a Division I program, are coming off a pair of tough losses to BCS-conference programs, a one-point loss to Seton Hall Friday and a seven-point defeat to Maryland on Dec. 21. Stony Brook paces America East in scoring defense, allowing just 61.1 ppg.
