UVM Hands SBU First League Loss, 3 More Men's Basketball Games Saturday
Home court has proven to be ultra important through the first few weeks of men's basketball conference play. That trend held up Friday night as Vermont defended its home floor in a rematch of last season's America East title game by handing Stony Brook its first league loss. Three more teams will try to defend their home court Saturday, while three others try to buck the trend.
On Friday, the Catamounts (12-6, 5-1 AE) shot 50 percent from the floor and score more points than any Stony Brook (13-5, 4-1 AE) opponent this season in an 81-73 win. The game was played in front of a packed out at Patrick Gym and was nationally televised on ESPNU. UVM, which has won 12 straight league games on its home floor, led by 18 points with 10 minutes left before the Seawolves stormed back to trim the deficit to four, but the Cats held on for the win. Clancy Rugg led the way with a career day, tying his career high with 19 points and added a career-best 15 boards for his first career double-double. Candon Rusin was the high scorer, notching a career-best 25 points for the Cats, 17 of which came after halftime. Jameel Warney led Stony Brook, which had its five-game win streak snapped, with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
On Saturday, there are three America East men's hoops contests. Maine (8-10, 2-3 AE) hosts Binghamton (2-16, 0-5 AE) at 2 p.m., New Hampshire (4-12, 0-4 AE) welcomes Boston U. (8-10, 2-3 AE) at 4 p.m. in a game that will be televised on Fox College Sports and WBIN in the Boston/Manchester markets. Tonight, Hartford (10-8, 3-2 AE) tries to stop Albany's (15-4, 4-1 AE) three-game win streak.
