Giosia, Lucido, O'Malley Receive Softball Weekly Awards
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- America East softball teams are in full swing will all seven teams having kicked off their seasons. A trio of players who stood out last week have earned America East weekly awards. The winners for the week ending Feb. 24 were announced Monday afternoon.
Stony Brook's Shayla Giosia earned Player of the Week honors while teammate Christine Lucido went a perfect 2-0 on the weekend to earn Pitcher of the Week recognition. UMBC's Bridget O'Malley picked up Rookie of the Week recogntion.
Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.) led Stony Brook to one of its three wins by hitting her second-career grand slam in a 13-2 victory over Bucknell Saturday and batted .333 for the week with five runs driven in en route to earning Player of the Week accolades. The sophomore outfielder, an America East second-team all-league choice last year, slugged .533 in four games last week and scored a team-best three runs.
Lucido (Melville, N.Y.) went a 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA last week for the Seawolves on way to earning Pitcher of the Week honors. The junior hurler pitched five innings on Saturday as Stony Brook handed Longwood its only loss of the season thus far, limiting the Lancers to two runs on five hits in a 3-2 SBU win. She then pitched two perfect innings in relief on Sunday vs. Bucknell and picked up the win in Stony Brook's 4-8 eight-inning win
O'Malley (Brooklyn, Md.) batted a team-best .571 (4-for-7) over the weekend and walked three times for a .700 on-base percentage. The freshman outfielder, who went 2-for-3 in UMBC's win over UNC-Wilmington Sunday, had four singles on the weekend, scored four runs and was 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts.
