Release: 03/04/2013

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Three America East softball standouts who led their teams to wins are the league's weekly award winners for the week ending March 3. The recipients were announced Monday afternoon.

UMBC took home a pair of honors after going 4-2 last week. Taylor Hall received Player of the Week accolades while Heather Brown hurled two shutouts to earn Pitcher of the Week honors. Albany's Maggie Cocks picked up Rookie of the Week honors.

Hall (Cosby, Va.) hit .611 (11-for-18) in six games last week while belting three extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs, and driving in nine runs. The sophomore catcher/designated player had five multi-hit games on the week recorded a 1.571 OPS (1.000 slugging, .571 on-base). The reigning Co-America East Rookie of the Year, opened the weekend with a perfect 3-3 game in an 18-2 victory against Morgan State. Hall launched her third home run of the season to account for UMBC's only run against St. Francis and came back on Sunday to belt her team-leading fourth of the year.

Brown (Pasadena, Md.) led the Retrievers in the circle over the weekend, hurling a pair of complete-game shutouts and accounting for two of UMBC's three wins at the UMBC Retriever Classic on way to win Pitcher of the Week recognition. The senior right-hander fired a three-hit shutout in a 7-0 win  over Morgan State in which she struck out seven and walked none. She then threw a one-hitter in an 11-0 five-inning win over St. Peter's, facing just one batter over the minimum. In 12.0 scoreless innings of work, Brown allowed just four hits, two walks and struck out eight.

Cocks (Walden, N.Y.) hit .500 (6-for-12) leading Albany to a 4-1 mark last week en route to earning Rookie of the Week honors. Four of the freshman short shop's six hits went for extra base, three doubles and one homer, the first of her career in a 7-6 win over Wichita State Sunday. Cocks also scored a pair of runs, drove in a pair and walked twice.
