Petersen Breaks NCAA Record to Earn Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Award

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Stony Brook senior Claire Petersen set an NCAA single-game record to earn America East Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Boston University’s Nell Burdis was named Defensive Player of the Week and Albany’s Rachel Bowles earned Rookie of the Week honors, the conference office announced Monday.

Petersen (Wantagh, N.Y.) earned her second America East Offensive Player of the Week honor after breaking the NCAA single-game assist record with 11 in Stony Brook’s 21-3 win over Longwood. The record was previously held by Hannah Nielsen (2009) and Emily Cooke (2013). The senior established a new school record in the contest with 13 points, as she also added two goals to top her own mark of 10 which she has hit three times in her career. Petersen moved into sixth all-time at Stony Brook in career points with 134, surpassing Diana Caroleo, who tallied 130 from 2005-08.

Burdis (Salt Point, N.Y.) earned her first Defensive Player of the Week honor after an outstanding two games against No. 13/13 Dartmouth and No. 10/6 Notre Dame. Burdis totaled eight ground balls, five draw controls and had three caused turnovers for the week, while also adding a goal. In a 12-7 loss to Dartmouth, Burdis had three ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover. In a 16-11 loss to Notre Dame, the junior totaled a team-high five ground balls, four draw controls and caused two turnovers while also scoring a goal on one shot.

Bowles (Cicero, N.Y.) was named Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, scoring two goals on two shots in a 9-8 overtime loss at No. 17/14 Massachusetts. Bowles has scored in her first four games, three of which have been multi-goal performances. The freshman also added two ground ball and two draw controls in the contest.
