Mask, Laney, Chaffee Recognized For Play with Softball Weekly Accolades
Jayme Mask propelled Boston University to three wins over UMBC en route to earning Player of the Week honors while Binghamton's Demi Laney and Taylor Chaffee were Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, respectively, after leading the Bearcats to a sweep of Maine.
Mask (Grafton, Mass.) served as the catalyst for the Terriers' offense en route to earning Player of the Week accolades. The junior outfielder batted .500, reached base seven times in 13 plate appearances, scored five runs, drove in a pair and was a perfect 8-for-8 in stolen base attempts. In Boston U.'s 8-0 win over UMBC on Saturday, Mask set a school record with four steals before driving in the winning run in a 2-1 victory later that day. In the final game, she scored one run and drove in another to help Boston U. pick up a 3-1 win.
Laney (Cassleberry, Fla.) went a perfect 2-0 in two outings, recording a 1.56 ERA on just five hits to lead the Bearcats to a three-game sweep over Maine this past weekend as she earned Pitcher of the Week honors. The junior right-hander struck out 15 Maine hitters in nine innings of work while issuing just one walk.
Chaffee (Watkins Glen, N.Y.) hit a team-best .714 (5-for-7) with a home run and four RBI in the Bearcats three-game sweep against Maine this past weekend to earn Rookie of the Week recognition for the second-straight week. The freshman catcher also drew three walks, recording an .800 on-base percentage, and did not strike out. She belted a grand slam in the Bearcats first game against Maine Saturday, an 11-2 win, and finished the weekend with four extra-base hits, including three doubles.
In addition to Binghamton's and Boston U.'s sweeps, Albany took two of three games from Stony Brook, winning the opener 2-1 in 13 innings and the rubber game, 4-0, while Stony Brook won the middle contest, 4-3 in eight.
With three weekends of conference play left, Albany and Binghamton are tied atop the league standings at 8-1 in league play. Stony Brook and Boston U. are next at 5-4, followed by Hartford (4-5), Maine (2-7) and UMBC (1-11).
