White Helps Maine to Sweep; Earns Baseball Player of the Week Honors
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After helping their teams to conference series wins over the weekend, Maine’s Eric White, Binghamton’s Jay Lynch and Stony Brook’s Tim Knesnik earned America East baseball weekly awards, the conference office announced Monday.
White earned Player of the Week for the second time this season, while Lynch was named Pitcher of the Week and Knesnik garnered Rookie of the Week accolades.
White (Brewer, Maine) paced Maine to a 4-0 week, including a three-game sweep of conference foe UMBC on the road. White had a fantastic week for the Black Bears, finishing with a .476 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage. He had 18 total bases in four games, tying for the conference lead in RBI with seven and finishing sixth in the conference in batting averaged at .444. Of White’s eight hits, four went for extra bases, blasting three home runs and a double. White went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBI in Maine's 19-0 win over UMBC, belting two home runs in the game. In the second game of the doubleheader, he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. He led off the top of the 10th inning with a home run which proved to be the game-winning run.
Lynch (Exton, Pa.) tossed a complete game while earning a win in the series-clinching game for the Bearcats over Albany on Sunday. Lynch allowed only one run on two hits while striking out eight in nine innings for Binghamton. After allowing a walk, a hit batsman and a pair of sacrifices to plate the first run, Lynch allowed only one more runner to reach second base in the game and had six, 1-2-3 innings.
Knesnik (Milford, Pa.) was solid in a pair of pitching appearances this week for the Seawolves to earn his first Rookie of the Week honor. The right-hander started against Manhattan on Wednesday and blanked the Jaspers over three innings, not allowing a single hit. He followed that up by pitching five brilliant innings of relief, helping stop Hartford's seventh-inning rally and then pitching out of a first and third, nobody out jam in the 10th inning to not allow a run. He finished the outing by pitching five innings and allowing three hits while striking out four and earned the victory when the Seawolves won it in the bottom of the 11th. Over the two outings, Knesik allowed only one run on three hits in eight innings of work with six strikeouts.
