Albany, Hartford, UMBC, Stony Brook To Play for 2013 Men's Lacrosse Championship
University at Albany, University of Hartford, UMBC and Stony Brook University will occupy Long Island next weekend, where the 2013 America East Men’s Lacrosse Championship will take place May 2-4. The tournament field and bracket were settled Saturday, as the Hawks, Retrievers and Seawolves all sealed tournament bids on the regular season’s final day.
The 2013 America East Men's Lacrosse Championship, the first played at a single site since 2009, will be held at Stony Brook’s Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, N.Y. Semifinal action will take place on Thursday, May 2 with No. 2 Hartford facing No. 3 UMBC at 4:30 p.m. in the first semifinal, followed by No. 1 Albany battling No. 4 Stony Brook at 7 p.m. in the nightcap. The two winners will face off for the league title on Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. with the winner earning a trip the NCAA Tournament, where America East teams have won three games since 2007.
High-definition video streams of the semifinals will air for free on AmericaEast.com Thursday while the championship game will air on ESPNU on Saturday.
Albany (11-4, 5-0 AE), the 10th-ranked team in the nation, will be the top seed for the America East Championship for the fourth time overall and first since 2007. Winners of seven of their last eight games, the Great Danes capped off their second perfect America East season, and first since 2002, with a 21-12 win at Stony Brook (Box Score). The top scoring team in the nation averaging 15.8 goals per game, Albany got 14 points from Miles Thompson, including five goals and nine assists, the most by any player in league history in a conference game.
Hartford (7-6, 3-2 AE) will make its third-straight America East Championship appearance and seeks its second America East title in three years. The Hawks, who are seeded second for the third-straight season, earned a tournament bid with a 17-11 win over Vermont (4-10, 1-4 AE) (Box Score) behind a career-high seven goals from Kevin O'Shea. Hartford outscored UVM, 6-2, in the fourth quarter to seal the outcome.
UMBC (6-7, 3-2 AE) earned its 10th America East Championship bid in as many seasons in the league, beating Binghamton (5-9, 1-4 AE), 10-9, on Pat Young's goal with 1:18 left (Box Score). The Retrievers, who are seeded third for the tournament, scored four of the game's final five goals after trailing 8-6 late in the third quarter. Young led the Retrievers with four scores.
Stony Brook (7-8, 2-2 AE), the tournament host, will appear in its 12th America East Championship in as many seasons in the league. Winners of three of the last four conference titles, the Seawolves beat Binghamton last week to position themselves for the tournment spot and got into the field by virtue of Vermont and Binghamton losing Saturday.
