CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Impressive performances during the final weekend before the America East Outdoor Track & Field Championships earned weekly awards for a quartet of athletes, the conference announced Tuesday. A pair of Boston U. distance runners in Rich Peters and Katie Matthews claimed Male and Female Track Performer of the Week honors, respectively. In the field events, Albany’s Alexander Bowen earned the Male Performer of the Week award while Maine’s Robyn McFetters was named Female Performer of the Week.

Peters (Bristol, England) broke his own school record in the 1,500 meters while competing at the Payton Jordan Invitational. The junior competed in the elite section of the event and posted a time of 3:40.05. Not only is that the fastest time in the conference by nearly five seconds, Peters now has the fourth fastest time in the country.

Bowen (Beacon, N.Y.) had another impressive high jump performance, this time competing at the prestigious Penn Relays. The sophomore cleared 7’2.5” to finish fourth out of 10 competitors in the championship division. Bowen’s leap was a half inch short of his best mark this spring, but would still easily be the best in the America East this season. Coming into the America East Championships, Bowen owns the 10th best high jump mark in NCAA Division I.

Matthews (Rocky Hill, Conn.) also headed to the Payton Jordan Invitational and like Peters she also broke her own school record. The graduate student shattered her previous mark in the 5,000 meters by nearly 17 seconds, crossing the finish line in 15:44.19. Matthews, who was the only collegiate athlete in the elite division, owns the eighth fastest time in the country.

McFetters (Barrington, R.I.) heads into the America East Championships after a dominating performance at the UMass Pre-Conference Meet over the weekend. The sophomore won the hammer throw by over 20 feet, registering a throw of 182’2”. That distance easily qualified McFetters for the ECAC Championships and is also top three in school history. It was also the top distance in the conference and stands as the 36th best mark in the NCAA Division I East Region.
