CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With three weeks remaining in the season playoff positions are still up for grabs in America East baseball. Maine and Albany both have a chance to clinch spots in the championship this weekend. The Black Bears have a magic number of five, which is any combination of Maine wins and Stony Brook losses. Albany has a magic number of six and plays the Seawolves this weekend. The Grea Danes can clinch a spot in the championship with a sweep. But Stony Brook is still very much alive, trailing Binghamton by only 1.5 games for the final championship spot.

Maine and Albany meet in a battle for first place this weekend. The Black Bears have been in first all year but lead the Great Danes by only 1.5 games after losing their first series of the season to Hartford last week. Starting pitcher Tommy Lawrence is a perfect 7-0 in conference play, allowing just six earned runs in 49.1 innings pitched.

Albany is on a roll, winning seven of the last nine games and five of the last six conference contests. In those games, the Great Danes have scored double-digit runs in four of those contests. Outfielder Josh Nethaway leads the team with a .333 batting average, driving in 29 runs.

Hartford won two of three against first-place Maine last weekend, using stellar pitching to move into third-place in the America East standings. Starting pitcher Sean Newcomb has been outstanding in conference play, going 4-1 with a 2.49 ERA. He leads the conference with 58 strikeouts in 43.1 innings pitched.

Binghamton is clinging to the final spot in the America East Championship after losing two of three to Stony Brook last weekend. The Bearcats took two of three from Hartford in the first meeting between the two squads. The Binghamton pitching staff is second in the league in conference games with a 2.68 ERA, as all three starters are in the top-12 of ERA.

Stony Brook has notched wins in two of its last three conference series since being swept by Albany, including taking two of three from Binghamton last weekend. The Seawolves are 1.5 games behind the Bearcats for the final playoff spot. Freshman Jack Parenty leads Stony Brook with a .327 batting average, and classmate Daniel Zamora has won each of his last two starts on the hill.

UMBC is looking to snap a five-game losing streak and is 5.5 games behind Binghamton for the final spot in the championship. Freshman Kevin LaChance leads the team with a .267 average.
