Albany Claims Second America East Commissioner's Cup

PORTLAND, Maine -- On the heels of winning eight America East championships during the 2012-13 season, University at Albany has claimed the conference’s Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup for the second time in school history, the league announced this evening at its annual awards dinner in Portland, Maine.

The Commissioner’s Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in America East as determined by a scoring system which rewards a school for success both during the regular season and championship competition in the conference’s 20 sports.

The Great Danes, which tied an America East record by winning eight league titles, also captured four regular-season crowns and as many runner-up finishes to help net 390 points, 90 more than any other school, the largest margin of victory since 2002. Stony Brook came in second place for second time in four years, earning 300 points, followed by UMBC (246 points) in third, University of New Hampshire (227) in fourth, Binghamton University (220) in fifth, University of Vermont (216) in sixth, University of Hartford (191), University of Maine (169) and Boston University (162).

School Highlights
   • Won second America East Commissioner’s Cup in program history (2004-05)
   • Captured conference championships in field hockey, men’s and women’s basketball,          men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field and men’s lacrosse
   • Regular-season champions in volleyball, women’s basketball, men’s lacrosse and softball
   • Runners up in volleyball, women’s tennis and softball
   • Reached championship final in 8-of-11 America East sponsored sports
   • Won both basketball championships in the same years, just the sixth occurance in league history

Stony Brook
   • Matched best-ever Commissioner’s Cup placement by finishing second (2009-10)
   • Won six America East championships, the second-most behind Albany
   • Swept the women’s lacrosse regular-season and tournament crown
   • Also won women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s tennis and softball titles
   • Won its third men’s basketball regular-season title in four seasons

   • Matched best-ever Commissioner’s Cup finish by placing third (2010-11; 2007-08)
   • Won the men’s soccer (second in three years) and men’s swimming and diving championships (ninth in 10 years)
   • Had a league-high five runners-up finishes (women’s swimming & diving, women’s indoor track & field, men’s lacrosse, men’s tennis and men’s outdoor         
    track & field crowns

New Hampshire
   • Best Commissioner’s Cup finish since coming in second in 2002-03.
   • Won the women’s swimming & diving title, the programs first since 2006
   • Captured the field hockey regular-season title
   • Runners-up in four sports (field hockey, men’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country)

   • 12th straight year finishing in fifth place or higher
   • Captured three league titles, including its sixth straight in men’s tennis as well as the volleyball and baseball crowns
   • Runners-up finishes in men’s swimming & diving, men’s indoor track & field and women’s outdoor track & field

   • Best finish since 2008-09 season.
   • Won first men’s soccer regular-season title since 1988
   • Runners up in men’s basketball, the eighth time since 2003 it’s finished first or second

   • Had a pair of runner-up finishes (women’s soccer, women’s basketball)

   • Won its first baseball regular-season title since 2002
   • Runners up in baseball

Boston University
   • Won its fifth-straight women’s soccer regular-season title
   • Was ineligible for conference championships

The scoring system for the Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup is as follows: In sports where regular-season round robin competition is conducted, the first-place institution in the final standings receives four points times the total number of teams involved in conference play. The second-place institution receives four less points; third place receives eight less points, and so on. Additionally, the America East (tournament) champion receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place receives four less points and so on down to the last-place institution which receives two points.

In sports where regular-season round robin competition is not conducted (cross country, tennis, track & field, swimming & diving), the first-place institution at the America East championship receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place gets four less points and so on down to the last place team which receives two points.
