UNH-SBU Kick Off League Play Sunday
America East conference play begins for two teams Sunday as New Hampshire and Stony Brook square off it the first league game of the season. Fans can watch the game for free on AmericaEast.TV at 1 p.m. Also Sunday, Vermont hosts Quinnipiac and Hartford visits Sacred Heart.
Stony Brook (6-4) is playing for the first time in a week and is seeking its sixth-straight win in a conference opener. The Seawolves are 49-13 in America East play since the 2009-10 season. New Hampshire (2-6) meanwhile is looking to snap a six-game losing skid. The game will pit one of the league's top offenses against one its top defenses. Stony Brook is thriving offensively, leading the league in scoring average (77.1 ppg) and field goal percentage (.460) while UNH leads the conference holding opponents to just 39.5 percent shooting from the field.
Vermont (3-6) hosts Quinnipiac in a 2 p.m. contest in its first action since Nov. 30. The Catamounts have won two of their last three games entering the day. Senior forward Brian Voelkel is 24 rebounds shy of becoming just the ninth player in league history to reach the 1,000-mark.
Hartford (3-8) is searching for its second win in three games as the Hawks beat Holy Cross on Dec. 8 but fell at Central Connecticut State Tuesday. Junior Mark Nwakamma ranks third n the league in scoring (16.4 ppg) and ranks eighth in rebounding (6.5 rpg).
On Saturday, Albany (5-5) fell for just the second time in five games, dropping a 69-60 decision to Colgate despite a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds from Sam Rowley. Also Saturday, Binghamton lost at Monmouth, 74-46. Jordan Reed paced the Bearcats with 13 points.
