Albany's Johnson, Stony Brook's Walker Earn Weekly Honors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Career performances have netted Albany's Gary Johnson and Stony Brook's Ahmad Walker America East men's basketball weekly honors. Johnson's career-high 28 points earned him Player of the Week while Walker scored a career-best 18 points last week to earn his first Rookie of the Week award of the season:

Player of the Week
Gary Johnson, Sr., Forward, Albany

  • Averaged 20.5 points and 3.0 rebounds over two games last week.
  • Shot 59.1 percent from the field.
  • Eclipsed his previous career high by 12 points, scoring 28 on 9-of-11 shooting in a win over Maine Saturday.
  • Had 13 points and four boards against UMass Lowell Wednesday.
Rookie of the Week
Ahmad Walker, Fr., Forward, UMass Lowell
  • Averaged 10.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in two Stony Brook wins last week.
  • Had the best game of his career in the Seawolves' win over UMass Lowell Saturday, scoring a team and career-high 18 points to go with seven rebounds and three assists.
Around the League
  • Stony Brook and Vermont are the lone unbeatens and are tied atop the league standings at 4-0.
  • The Seawolves beat Binghamton and UMass Lowell last week while the Catamounts upended Maine and UMBC.
  • Vermont has won six straight games and seven of its last eight.
  • The Catamounts are beating teams by an average of 25 points during their win streak.
  • SBU is receiving votes in the latest Mid-Major Top 25.
  • Albany and UMass Lowell are tied for second place at 3-2.
  • The River Hawks have won three of their last four games.
  • Albany is tied for fourth nationally, shooting 77.2 percent from the free throw line as a team.
  • Four different Binghamton players have earned Rookie of the Week honors this season, the first time in America East history four players from one team have earned the honor.
  • Vermont's Brian Voelkel sits in sixth place on the league’s all-time rebound list (1,050) and is just five shy of passing Kevin Roberson as Vermont's all-time leader and for fifth place on America East's list.
  • America East is youth driven as six of the top 15 scorers are freshmen or sophomores.
