Richards, McCarley Repeat in WBB Weekly Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – It’s déjà vu in the America East women’s basketball weekly awards as Albany sophomore Shereesha Richards and UMBC freshman Taylor McCarley were named Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively. Richards led Albany to a pair of wins while averaging a double-double, while McCarley led all freshmen in scoring. Here are the week 11 award winners:

Player of the Week
Shereesha Richards, So., Albany
Oceanview, N.J.

  • Led the conference in scoring (21.0 ppg) and ranked second in rebounding (10.5 rpg) while shooting 53.3 percent from the floor and 81.8 percent from the free throw line.
  • Recorded her 10th and 11th double-doubles of the season, giving her four-straight.
  • Finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds in a win at UMass Lowell, hitting 9-of-11 from the free throw line.
  • Went 9-of-15 from the floor while scoring 19 points and snagging 11 boards in a win over Maine.

Rookie of the Week
Taylor McCarley, Fr., UMBC
Bowie, Md.

  • Led all America East freshmen last week by averaging 13.0 points per game to go with 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 77.8 percent from the free throw line.
  • Started the week with eight points, four rebounds and four assists in 28 minutes vs. New Hampshire.
  • Scored a career-high 18 points to go with a career-high eight rebounds while also recording three steals in a loss to Vermont.

Around the League

  • New Hampshire beat Hartford at Chase Family Arena, 61-56, for the first time since 2003.
  • UMBC sophomore Bridget O’Donnell had seven blocks at Vermont, the most for an America East player since UMBC’s Tope Obajolu had 7 at Vermont on Jan. 22, 2012.
  • Albany sophomore Shereesha Richards has 11 double-doubles on the season, recording one in each of her last four games.
  • Stony Brook is 3-1 in conference play for the first time since 2006-07 when it started 7-1.
  • New Hampshire’s 5-game winning streak is the longest for the team since 1998-99. In addition, it is the first 3-0 start in conference play since 2004-05.
  • Albany’s Shereesha Richards scored a program record 41 points at Vermont, the most for any America East player since Boston U.’s Katie Meinhardt had 43 in March of 2005.
  • Richards’ eight Player of the Week honors are a single-season league record.
  • UMass Lowell earned its first Division I win, 65-57, at UMBC.
  • 5 different players have had 30-point performances, the most since 7 different players accomplished the feat in 2008-09.
  • Stony Brook finished with its best non-conference winning percentage and highest win total at 9-4.
  • New Hampshire freshman Kristen Anderson became the first America East freshman since Binghamton’s Andrea Holmes in 2009 to score 30+ points in a game.
  • New Hampshire guard Kelsey Hogan reached the 300-assist mark to rank 11th in program history.
  • Albany’s Shereesha Richards made 17 field goals at Vermont, the most for an America East player since Northeastern’s Maralene Zwarich made 17 vs. UMBC on Jan. 17, 2004.
