2014 Men's #AEHoops Championship Bracket Set
Vermont, already the league's regular-season champion entering the day, outlasted Binghamton, 92-82 in overtime, while Stony Brook, which was locked into the No. 2 seed prior to play Sunday, used a late 16-0 run to beat Albany, 83-78. Hartford beat UMBC, 67-56, for its sixth win in its last seven games and Maine overcame a double-digit deficit to beat New Hampshire, 83-79.
Those results make Hartford the No. 3 seed and Albany the No. 4 seed for the second-straight year. UMBC is the No. 5 seed, its best since the 2008 tournament. Binghamton, Maine and New Hampshire all finished tied at 4-12 with the Bearcats winning the three-way tiebreak and earning the No. 6 seed. The Black Bears will be seeded No. 7 and the Wildcats are No. 8.
The 2014 America East Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship presented by SEFCU will be held March 7-10 in Albany, N.Y., at the University at Albany’s SEFCU Arena. The men's quarterfinal games take place Saturday, March 8 with the first game tipping off at noon. The four winners will advance to the semifinals on Sunday, March 9. The two semifinal winners will play for the America East title and an automatic NCAA bid on Saturday, March 15 at 11:30 a.m. at the highest remaining seed’s home court.
Quarter and semifinal rounds of the 2014 Championship will air live on ESPN3 while the championship game being nationally televised on ESPN2. All games will also be available via WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app on smartphones and tablets.
Top-seeded Vermont (21-9, 15-1 AE) and eighth-seeded New Hampshire (6-23, 4-12 AE) kick off the men's quarterfinal action on Saturday at 12 p.m. The Catamounts, the top seed for the fifth time since 2002, completed the first one-loss league slate by an America East team since the 2006-07 campaign. The Wildcats are seeking their first tournament win since 2010.
Fourth-seeded Albany (15-14 9-7 AE) will face fifth-seeded UMBC (9-20, 5-11 AE) in the second quarterfinal 30 minutes following the first semifinal. The Great Danes, who are seeded fourth for the fourth straight year, will try to repeat as league champions out of that position. The Retrievers will try to reach the league semifinals for the second-straight year.
Second-seeded Stony Brook (21-9, 13-3 AE) takes on seventh-seeded Maine (6-22, 4-12 AE) in the third quarterfinal at 6 p.m. The Seawolves, who are seeded second or better for the fourth time in five years, have won six tournament games over the last four years but are still in search of their first league title. The Black Bears will be looking to snap a nine-game tournament losing skid.
Third-seeded Hartford (16-15, 10-6 AE) battles sixth-seeded Binghamton (7-22, 4-12 AE) in the final men's quarterfinal 30 minutes following Stony Brook-Maine. The Hawks, who are seeded third for the second-straight year, will try to reach the semifinals for the third time in four seasons. The Bearcats have their best seed since 2009 and hope to reach to the semifinals for the first time in its last four tournament appearances.
The Vermont-New Hampshire winner will take on the Albany-UMBC winner in Sunday's first semifinal at 5 p.m., while the Stony Brook-Maine winner will face the Hartford-Binghamton winner in the second semifinal 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first semifinal.
The semifinal winners will then meet for the America East title on Saturday, March 15 at the highest remaining seed. Game time is 11:30 a.m.
