2014 Women's #AEHoops Championship Bracket Set
The 2014 America East Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship will be held March 7-10 in Albany, N.Y., at the University at Albany’s SEFCU Arena. Four quarterfinal games will begin on Friday, March 7 with the first game tipping off at noon. All of the games at the 2014 Championship will broadcast live on ESPN3 or ESPNU and available via WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app on smartphones and tablets.
The semifinals will feature the four remaining teams on Sunday, March 9 beginning at 11 a.m. Both games will be available live on ESPN3. The title game will held on Monday, March 10 at 4 p.m. at SEFCU Arena The final, which will crown the 2014 America East Champion and determine the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
The Great Danes (25-4, 15-1 AE) had already clinched the No. 1 seed and the regular-season title for the second-straight season heading into Saturday’s action. Albany had its America East record 38-game conference winning streak stopped by Stony Brook, falling, 66-56. The Great Danes will take on No. 8 seed Binghamton (5-23, 2-13 AE) at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinals on Friday night as they begin their quest for a third-straight tournament title.
Stony Brook (22-7, 13-3 AE) earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament, matching the team’s highest finish in program history (2005-06), with the win at Albany. The Seawolves handed the Great Danes their first America East loss since Jan. 28, 2012 and enter the championship riding a seven-game winning streak. Stony Brook will take on No. 7 UMBC in the first game of the America East Championship at noon on Friday.
New Hampshire (18-11, 12-4) earned its highest seed since 2004-05, finishing third with a 12-4 conference mark and the team’s highest winning-percentage in conference play since 1996-97. The Wildcats will face No. 6 Vermont in the second quarterfinal game at 2 p.m.
Maine (16-13, 10-6) finished off its best regular-season since winning the regular-season title in 2004-05, beating New Hampshire, 66-62, on the road on Saturday to earn the No. 4 seed. The Black Bears have had a 13-win turnaround so far from last season and will face No. 5 Hartford in the nightcap on Friday at 8 p.m.
Hartford (12-17, 9-7 AE) entered the day a game behind Maine for the No. 4 seed and did their part by beat Vermont to close out the regular-season but needed a Maine loss to take over fourth in the standings. The Hawks have reached the tournament final three of the last four seasons.
Vermont (7-22, 4-12) was the only other team other than Albany to know its seed heading into Saturday, as the Catamounts finished in the No. 6 slot. Vermont will take on No. 3 New Hampshire Friday.
UMBC (4-24, 3-13) and Binghamton (5-24, 2-14) faced each other on Saturday with the winner taking the No. 7 seed and the loser finishing eighth. The Retrievers earned a, 66-60, double-overtime victory and will face No. 2 Stony Brook in the first round of the tournament on Friday. Under head coach Phil Stern, the Retrievers are the lowest seed in America East history in any sport to win a title, doing so as a No. 7 seed in 2007. They have reached the semifinals in two of the last three seasons.
Binghamton will take on top-seed and host Albany in the first game of the evening session on Friday.
