Bearcats, Retrievers Honored in #AETEN Week 3

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Bearcats and Retrievers take home the America East men’s and women’s tennis awards in week three. The men’s Player of the Week honor goes to UMBC sophomore Melker Svard, while rookie Annie DiMuro of Binghamton garners her second-straight recognition. Here’s at a look at this week’s Players of the Week:

Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

Melker Svard, So., UMBC
Gothenburg, Sweden

  • Improved to 8-2 on the season at No. 2 in singles play with a pair of wins over George Mason and Drexel.
  • Only dropped a pair of games (6-1, 6-1) in a triumph over George Mason.
  • Teamed up with Justin Carter at No. 1 doubles to best 8-2 the Patriots.
  • UMBC is on a seven-straight match winning streak.

Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

Annie DiMuro, Fr., Binghamton
Chester, N.J.

  • Defeated her Rutgers singles opponent in three sets (7-5, 2-6, 10-7).
  • Has won six-straight singles matches.
  • Leads the Bearcats with a record of 14-7 overall in tournament and dual play.
  • Picked up the lone point for the team in a 6-1 loss to Rutgers.

Around the League

  • The UMBC men’s tennis team extended its winning streak to seven straight with a 5-1 victory at Drexel at the Legacy Tennis Center on Sunday evening, moving to 9-3 on the season.
  • The Retriever women’s tennis team fell late Sunday evening to Drexel, 4-3, ending their three-match winning streak, moving back to .500 (5-5) on the season.
  • Both teams UMBC programs will head west for their Spring Break to play a series of three matches against Nevada, Seattle and Sacramento State.
  • The Binghamton women's tennis team went 1-1 over the weekend, picking up a 4-3 win over NJIT on Saturday. BU (3-6) trailed 2-0 in team scoring but found a way to win four of the next five singles matches to claim their third win of the season.
  • Albany women currently stand at 5-6 on the season.
  • Neither Hartford nor Stony Brook competed this past weekend.
