This Week in America East Baseball - Week 2
Two more teams start conference play this weekend as three series begin on Saturday with doubleheaders. Take a look at the three weekend series:
Binghamton (4-11, 0-2) at Hartford (7-7, 0-0)
Sat., March 22, 12 p.m. - Jack Rogalla (Jr., RHP) 2-2, 2.32 ERA vs. Sean Newcomb (Jr., LHP) 1-1, 0.00 ERA
Sat., March 22, 3 p.m. - Mike Urbanski (Jr., RHP) 0-1, 6.30 ERA vs. Brian Hunter (Sr., RHP) 0-3, 5.85 ERA
Binghamton, the defending America East champions, has dropped seven of its last eight games with four of those losses coming by two or fewer runs. Mike Urbanski, who has drawn attention from MLB scouts, returns to the rotation in the No. 2 slot for the weekend after missing last weekend due to a minor injury. Bill Bereszniewicz leads the team and ranks fifth in the conference with a .345 batting average.
Hartford has its best 14-game start since starting 11-3 in 1988, going 7-7 through 14 non-conference games. Sean Newcomb takes the ball in game one and is one of only two pitchers in the country to throw 20-plus inning this season without allowing an earned run. The series can be seen on AmericaEast.TV.
Albany (4-8, 2-1) at Stony Brook (6-9, 0-0)
Saturday, March 15, 12 p.m. - Danie Castro (Sr., LHP) 0-0, 3.48 ERA vs. Frankie Vanderka (Sr., RHP) 1-2, 3.42 ERA
Saturday, March 15, 3 p.m. - Stephen Woods (Fr., RHP) 0-1, 8.71 ERA vs. Brandon McNitt (Sr., RHP) 2-1, 2.22 ERA
Sunday, March 16, 12 p.m. - Kevin Archbold (Sr., LHP) 1-0, 0.90 ERA vs. TBA
Albany took two of three from UMBC in the team's conference-opening series, battling back from a pair of 4-0 deficits to earn victories in the final two games. Reliever Mike Gallup came up clutch for the Great Danes, picking up a win and a save to earn Co-Pitcher of the Week honors. Senior Josh Nethaway, who was named a Senior CLASS Award cadidate this week, leads the team with a .333 batting average.
Stony Brook returns from a west coast spring break trip where the Seawolves' pitching staff allowed more than three earned runs just one time in five games. The co-preseason favorites rank third in the conference in team ERA at 4.57 and third in team batting average at .257. Kevin Krause paces the offense, leading the conference with three home runs and 12 RBI.
Maine will play its first conference series after spending two weeks in Florida during the team's spring break trip. The Black Bears won the conference regular-season last year before falling in the title game against Binghamton. The Black Bears boast two of the best offensive threats in the conference to this stage in the season in Troy Black, who leads the league with a .404 batting average, and Colin Gay, who ranks second with a .381 batting average.
UMBC dropped two of three against Albany in the team's conference-opening series, despite holding four-run leads in each of the two losses. Hunter Dolshun is the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, after clubbing two home runs last week to lead the conference in that category. The UMBC starting rotation this weekend has three pitchers with ERAs below 2.70 in Joe Vanderplas, Mac Gill and Riley Stephenson.
