#AESB League Play Begins This Weekend

America East softball opens this weekend with  two series scheduled for Saturday, March 22 and Sunday, March 23. Reigning champion Stony Brook will play host to regular-season champion Albany, while Maine hits the road to take on Hartford.

Here's a look at the two weekend series:

Albany (8-5) at Stony Brook (8-10)

Road trips to warm weather destinations have helped the Albany and Stony Brook softball squads get their seasons off to solid startw. The Great Danes currently have eight wins and five losses, while the Seawolves are just two games back from .500 (8-10).

The 2013 regular-season championship Albany looks to get revenge in a rematch of last year’s America East Championship against Stony Brook, in which they were denied the title. The Great Danes are led by Maggie Cocks who is batting .343 in 18 games with 18 hits and seven runs scored.

Stony Brook, the 2013 AE Champions, head into the series with a four-game win streak, including a three-game homestand run. Olivia Minton currently sports a .340 batting average over 53 at bats and has knocked in seven runs off 18 hits.

Maine (8-8) at Hartford (4-11)

Harford enters league play looking build off its doubleheader sweep of Rhode Island Thursday. The Hawks are paced by Sawyer Fried who has posted a .323 batting average to go with 10 hits, five RBI and having crossed the plate eight times.

The Black Bears are off to a solid .500 start (8-8) after having missed the conference tournament for the past two years (2012, ’13). Maine’s Shelby Obert has a team-best .393 batting average with 11 hits and six runs, while teammate Jessica Burke is hitting .349 with a team-best 15 hits and seven runs.

Binghamton (7-10) at UMass Lowell (3-12)

The Binghamton-UMass Lowell three-game series scheduled from March 22-23 has been postponed due to inclement weather. The series will be rescheduled at a later date.
