Albany, UMBC Earn Final Outdoor #AETF Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Albany takes home three of the four final awards, while UMBC earns it’s eighth player of the week of 2014 heading into the Outdoor Championships at Vermont Saturday, May 3 through Sunday, May 4. Here’s a look at the final America East Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Awards:


Women’s Outdoor Track Performer of the Week
Silvia Del Fava, Sr., Albany
Lucca Italy/ITG Nottolini/University of Florence

  • Placed fourth in the championship section of the 10,000.
  • Crossed the finish line with a mark of 34.13.82.
  • Notched a new school record, shattering Brittney Lane’s 2013 standard (34:26.47).
  • Currently ranks among the top NCAA Division I collegiate performers, sitting at 38th nationally.
  • The Albany women stay steady at 10th in the USTFCCCA northeast rankings.

Women’s Outdoor Field Performer of the Week
Alisha Beeman, Jr., UMBC
Bridgeport, Conn./Bunnell/Hartford

  • Reset and matched personal-best records with two top-10 marks at the Penn Relays.
  • Broke her own school record enroute to securing a victory in the javelin (43.92m).
  • Cleared 1.68 meters in the high jump for a 10th-place finish and to tie her previous career-mark.
  • Her javelin toss ranks 98th in the country, 47th in the east and second among league throwers.

Men’s Outdoor Track Performer of the Week
Jonathan Santana, Sr., Albany
Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech

  • Had the best splits of each Great Dane squad as he sprinted on five relay teams for Albany at the Penn Relays (3 trials, 2 finals).
  • Great Danes raced to two top-five relay IC4A finals finishes, including the 4x200 (4th, 1:25.77) and the 4x100m (5th, 40.98).
  • He split 21.0 in his leg of the 4x2 to help the Danes to the fastest finish at the Penn Relays.
  • Albany’s pace was also the best 4x2 Penn Relays mark in program history.
  • The 4x100-meter squad currently ranks 76th in the East and ranks second in the league behind their own time.
  • The Great Danes drop to eighth in the current USTFCCCA northeast rankings.

Men’s Outdoor Field Performer of the Week
Alexander Bowen Junior, Jr., Albany
Beacon, N.Y./Beacon

  • Collected a second-place finish in the championship section of the high jump at the Penn Relays.
  • Posted a season-best mark of 7’2.25”.
  • Mark is tied for 14th in the nation and fifth in the east.
  • The Great Danes drop to eighth in the current USTFCCCA northeast rankings.

Around the League – Women’s

  • Vermont is currently 15th in the USTFCCCA northeast rankings.
  • Yolanda Ngarambe won the 400-meter by more than 1.5 seconds, crossing the finish line in 57.91 for a new personal record in the. Christa Weaver placed second in the high jump (1.57m). Vermont collected several third place finishes on the women’s side including Sara Roderick (15.53, 100 hurdles), Alicia Clark (17:23.49, 5000-meter), Dana Gaetani (1:06.50, 400-meter hurdles), Maura Knowles (25.99, 200-meter) and Ellen Bridgman (1.52, high jump).
  • Hartford’s Tiffany Harrison grabbed second in the 400-meter (57.89) and Maggie Fuller took second in the high jump with a height of 1.55 meters. Maggie Fuller (1.55m) and Lauren Bossi (1.50m) took second and third, respectively, in the high jump.
  • The 4x200 meter relay team of Mercedes Jackson, Briana Young, Marie Yuille and Deborah Adelola rewrote the UMBC record in the event with a time of 1:37.23, clipping the previous mark of 1:37.88.
  • Janice Johnson of Albany placed seventh overall in the eastern section of the women’s shot put with a personal-best 13.50 meters.
  • Lauren Perrodin posted a victory in the 100-meter (12.30 seconds). The Wildcats' 4x100-meter relays squad also captured a first-place finish as Virginia Lavallee, Abbey Smith, Sydney Kay and sophomore Molly Clark recorded a time of 46.76. Lavallee also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.88). The Wildcats also got a top-two finish from senior Allison Brehm (25.92). Rosemary Read took fifth in the hammer (173’11”).

Around the League – Men’s

  • UMBC Holds strong at 10th in the Mid-Atlantic USTFCCCA rankings.
  • Maine enters the USTFCCCA top-15 rankings at 15.
  • Junior Thor Serafenas snapped his own UMBC record while winning the hammer throw at Penn with a heave of 59.59 meters (195’6”) and leads the conference by six feet, sits 43rd in the East Region and 83rd nationally. Teammate Dennison Long placed fifth with a 100-meter time of 10.59 that ranks 85th in the east.
  • Aaron Tenney won the high jump (1.90 meters). In the men’s 400-meter UVM tallied 15 points, led by Nick DeLuna in second (50.10), Ryan Gerrity was fourth (50.23), while Dan DeLuna came in seventh (51.02).  In the 800-meter Patrick Coppinger was third (1:53.98) and Thomas O'Leary grabbed sixth (1:54.44). Coppinger, O'Leary and the DeLuna brothers combined to win the 4x400-meter relay in a photo finish (3:23.47).
  • Maine’s Justin Gagne broke two school records in the shot put (58-6.75) and the discus (53.95). Kelton Cullenburg took second in a field of over 30 entrants in the 5000 with a time of 14:25.06.
  • UNH’s Ross Hardy (49.96) and Daniel Deschenes (51.00) placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 400-meter. Robert Biro took third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:50.35). Jeremy Wildgoose recorded a personal-best 1500 time of 4:01.10 (6th). Michael finished third in the shot put event (46’3.50”).
  • Hartford’s Erik Quitzau set the school record in the 110 hurdles (15.38), while teammate Rashawn Providence posted a season-best mark of 13.26-meters in the triple jump to finish sixth. Andrew Dwyer also had a top-10 finish in the 800 with a season-best 1:59.07 (6th).
